Dear Yaseen,

Thank you for your request for information received by The University of
Manchester on 14 May 2020 which was as follows (numbered for ease):

I  would like to know the following statistics,

1.       The number of applications received to your university for
undergraduate degree studies for the years 2017,2018,2019 and 2020.

2.       I would also like to know the number of total offers for
undergraduate degree places made for the years of 2017,2018 ,2019 and 2020
.

3.       I would like to know the average (mean) amount of money spent by
the university on each student enrolled in an undergraduate degree ,
please separate this per department (e.g. for social sciences the
university spent x amount on each student )and please provide these
figures for the years 2017,2018,2019 and 2020.

4.       I would like to know what were the top 3 most common reasons why
student applications for undergraduate courses were rejected

5.       I would like to know the total number of undergraduate degree
places available as an estimate/ a range for the years
2015,2016,2017,2018,2019 and 2020.

6.       I would finally like to know the total undergraduate dropout rate
as a percentage of total undergraduate students for the years
2017,2018,2019 and 2020.

The University has now considered your request and our response can be
found below. Please note that we are unable to provide data for 2020 as
this cycle is still on-going and the complete data is therefore not yet
held.

1.       2017: 63,072

2018: 64,101

2019: 71,063

2.       2017: 32,760

2018: 33,677

2019: 36,306

3.       This information is not held however you can find some
information on how we allocate tuition fees on our website at
[1]https://www.manchester.ac.uk/discover/go...
as well as some more detail in our financial accounts (linked on the page
provided).

4.       Individual reasons are not available as this would require
reading each individual application record to extract the data which would
take greatly in excess of the 18 hour ‘Appropriate Limit’ allowed for with
FOI requests and as such, under Section 12 of the FOIA we would not be
obliged to respond to any of your request. However to avoid this, and so
that we can provide you with the rest of the information, we have chosen
not to apply that here. What we can give you is the generic overarching
reason which is similar to “Your qualifications/predicted grades do not
meet our academic requirements”. In addition to this, where we have
interviews as part of the selection process we also have “Your application
was not competitive enough to be invited to interview” and “You were
unsuccessful in the interview stage of our admissions process”.

5.       The estimate/range would be 8,000-9,000.

6.       This information is available from HESA (although as per our
previous advice 2019/20 is still ongoing so that data is not available).
For example for 2018/19, it can be found at
[2]https://www.hesa.ac.uk/data-and-analysis....
You can also select exactly what dropout rate you are after (e.g. for
first years only).

I trust this information is of use to you.

Kind regards

Sharon
