Undergraduate Admission Statistics in Selected Subjects

The request was successful.

Dear University College London,

I was wondering if it would be possible to produce a breakdown of admissions statistics for a selection of the University's undergraduate courses in the past 5 years.

Similar to the format that the University had previously used to disclose the information (https://www.whatdotheyknow.com/request/c...), I hope that the University would provide the latest statistics for:

1. Architecture BSc K100
2. Biochemistry BSc C700
3. Biochemistry MSci CC70
4. Biological Sciences BSc C900
5. Biological Sciences MSci C901

7. Chemistry BSc F100
8. Chemistry MSci F101
9. Computer Science BSc G400
10. Computer Science MEng G402

38. Physics MSci F303
39. Psychology BSc C800
40. Statistics BSc G300
41. Statistics, Economics and Finance BSc GLN0

Furthermore, I'd also like to know about the undergraduate admission statistics for Chinese students (of Chinese nationality) in the last 5 years, including the number of applicants and the number of offers made in general.

I deeply apologize for the inconvenience that my request would inevitably bring. It would also be perfectly fine to send the figures for all the undergraduate courses if you find the task of sorting these selected subjects too much of a hassle.

I look forward to hearing from you.

Yours faithfully,

Stephen Li

Dear Mr Li,

Thank you for your below request for information.

Could you please provide some clarification as to what year(s) you are referring to?

If you are after information for the previous 5 years, can we take this as being 2013, 2014, 2015, 2016 and 2017 entry (given that we are still part way through the 2018 cycle)?

Also, we are unclear what you are looking for in regards to Chinese applicants. Do you want the same breakdown of the 40 programmes they have listed for the last 5 years or is this a more general question which is overall UG programme application data?

I look forward to hearing from you.

Dear Mehwish,

I apologize for the ambiguity of my descriptions. On the issue of the year of the entry cycle, you could take it as being the 2013, 2014, 2015, 2016 and 2017 entry if you don't have all the statistics for the 2018 entry year. In this case, it would also be much appreciated if you were able to provide the number of applicants and the number of offers made for the courses that I outlined in the 2018 entry year.

In terms of the second request, it would be a more general question on the UG application data for the whole Chinese nationals at UCL.

Thank you.

Yours sincerely,
Stephen Li

Dear Stephen,

Thank you for your help and the clarification provided.

Can I just check that in addition to your original request, you are now asking for the number of applicants and offers for the 2018 entry year?

I'm not sure whether this will be available for the reasons stated previously however, I will check and will get back to you.

Dear Mehwish,

Yes, I would be asking for the number of applicants and offers made in the 2018 entry year for the courses that I outlined. I understand that you may not have the statistics as the admission cycle for 2018 has not yet ended.

Yours sincerely,

Stephen Li

Furthermore, I'd also like to know about the undergraduate admission
statistics for Chinese students (of Chinese nationality) in the last 5
years, including the number of applicants and the number of offers made in
general.

Clarification received: Yes, I would be asking for the number of
applicants and offers made in the 2018 entry year for the courses that I
outlined. I understand that you may not have the statistics as the
admission cycle for 2018 has not yet ended.

A) Please see the attached PDF document for the undergraduate courses
specified and Chinese undergraduate applicants for the years 2013 onwards.
Please note that the enrolment data for 2018 is not yet available.

As you can see, exact counts of four or less have been withheld because
these are personal data of third parties or, if linked with other personal
identifiers in the public domain, would be likely to become personal data.
This information has been withheld under section 40(2) of the FOIA by
virtue of s40 (3)(a)(i).

Section 40(2) of the FOIA allows a public authority to withhold
information under the FOIA where (i) the requested information is personal
data relating to someone other than the requester and (ii) its disclosure
would breach any of the data protection principles. In this case we
believe that the requested information could relate to and identify
individual applicants as well as admission tutor(s) and would be
considered as their personal data. The disclosure of this personal data
would not be within the reasonable expectations of the individuals
concerned and it would be unfair to do so; this therefore breaches the
first data protection principle.

It is for these reasons that this information is exempt under section
40(2) of the Act.
