Ultimate ownership of the crown estates assets
Dear The Crown Estate,
Who would ultimately own the Crown Estates assets, were the monarchy to be abolished?
I understand the assets are held in trust for the reigning monarch, but are specifically not owned by the government. Would they default to the ex-monarch were the monarchy cease to exist?
Yours faithfully,
A Rick

Thank you for your enquiry. We do not hold any information to answer your
question.
However, I can confirm that The Crown Estate land and property is owned by
the monarch in right of the Crown, that is, it is owned by the monarch for
the duration of their reign, by virtue of their accession to the throne.
But it is not the private property of the monarch - it cannot be sold by
the monarch, nor do revenues from it belong to the monarch. It is also the
case that the Government does not own The Crown Estate. It is managed by
an independent organisation - established by statute - headed by a Board
(also known as The Crown Estate Commissioners), and all of the surplus
revenue from the estate is paid each year to the Treasury for the benefit
of the nation's finances.
Of course, there is no precedent for what might happen to The Crown Estate
land should the monarchy be abolished, and there is no such provision in
statute, so there is no clear answer to your question, I am afraid.
I am sorry we don’t hold information to provide you with an exact answer,
but if you have any further queries, please do get in touch. You might
find some of the information on our website of interest:
