UK Population Figures Clarification

John Perks made this Freedom of Information request to Office for National Statistics

The request was successful.

Dear Office for National Statistics,

Please can you clarify if the UK Population figures as found on the ONS website (link below for reference) are taken at the beginning or end of the given year?

Please also clarify how the Net Migration and Natural Changes figures should relate i.e. should the totals of these match up each year?

https://www.ons.gov.uk/peoplepopulationa...

From my analysis, the figures don't seem to match up but I may have made the wrong assumptions.

For example in 2016 -

Estimated total population = 65,648,054 (assumed to be correct at end of 2016)
Difference from previous year = 538,020

But as also given on this ONS webpage -

Difference from Natural Changes = 177,641
Difference from Net Migration = 249,000
Difference total from previous year = 426,641 - This doesn't align with the above

>> Unknown variance = 111,379

Please can you help me understand/correct for this variance? Is there another source of population change that needs to be factored in?

Yours faithfully,

John Perks
