TV Licencing Requirement

The request was partially successful.

Dear British Broadcasting Corporation,

Is it considered a requirement to have a TV Licence if you have a TV which is not connected to an areal or satellite dish and only used for none BBC I-Player catchup and other services such as Netflix, therefore only connected to the internet and not being used to watch anything from the BBC.

Yours faithfully,

Aiden Doherty

Dear FOI Enquiries,

Please can you state the statute or information you hold regarding the need to hold a TV Licence to own a TV if it is not used to watch or record live TV as you have suggested in response to my previous FOI request.

There is no requirement to hold a TV Licence, unless the household is watching/recording TV Broadcasts "live" off-air (or the equivalent via Cable or Internet Streaming).

This requirement is stipulated by the Communications Act 2003 and the TV LIcensing Regulations 2004.
