"Truants", or desperate children with unsupported SENs?

P. Smith made this Freedom of Information request to Essex County Council

This request has been closed to new correspondence from the public body. Contact us if you think it ought be re-opened.

Response to this request is long overdue. By law, under all circumstances, Essex County Council should have responded by now (details). You can complain by requesting an internal review.

Dear Essex County Council,

Of all the children classed as "truanting" from mainstream school in the last five years, how many had a diagnosis on the autism spectrum? (Including Asperger Syndrome.)

Of all the children classed as "truanting" from mainstream school in the last five years, how many had a suspected autism spectrum condition? (Including Asperger Syndrome.)

Of all the children classed as "truanting" from mainstream school in the last five years, how many had other diagnosed SENs?

Of all the children classed as "truanting" from mainstream school in the last five years, how many had suspected SENs of some kind?

What happened to them?

Thank you,

Yours faithfully,

[P. Smith]

Essex Parent Partnership is still not independent.

Dear Your Right To Know,

The government is proposing to clamp down even more on parents of "truanting" children.

How will this affect Essex parents of children with undiagnosed Aspergers / autism / other SENs, whose children may refuse school because they are undiagnosed, misunderstood, unsupported, thoroughly depressed / suicidal?

Diagnosis is still heavily resisted in Essex, informed diagnosis is still hard to come by (lack of training of the diagnosticians in autism) and parents cannot get a referral for diagnosis out of county.

What are they supposed to do?

Yours sincerely,

[P. Smith]
