FOI Officer, Stockport Metropolitan Borough Council

Dear Mr Shammas,

I am writing in response to your request for information (ref FOI 6534).

The relevant Council Service(s) has searched for the requested information
and our response is as follows.

There have been 55 finalised school attendance prosecutions in relation to
such children in 2012 (as at 10.12.2012) + 6 further cases where
prosecutions hearings have taken place or are scheduled to take place
during 2012 but the cases have not yet been finalised, making an overall
total of 61.

However, it should be pointed out that within the figure of 61 there are
53 different individuals, with 8 parents prosecuted for two offences.

In responding to this question, the term "truanting" has been interpreted
as referring to school attendance offences under section 444(1) and
444(1A) Education Act 1996.
