Trends: ethnicity and religion

Charles Bell made this Freedom of Information request to Wolverhampton City Council

This request has been closed to new correspondence from the public body. Contact us if you think it ought be re-opened.

The request was successful.

Dear Wolverhampton City Council,

I would be grateful if you could provide whatever information you have concerning the age, ethnicity and religious persuasions of residents within your local authority going back as far as records allow. If you have undertaken or are aware of projections of the same into the future that would also be helpful.

Yours faithfully,

Dear Mr Bell

It would be helpful if you could clarify your request. I have outlined below the data that we are able to provide should you require it.

We can:-

Provide age related data from 1981, and direct you to earlier age related data from the city's Archives that goes back as far as 1801.

Provide ethnicity records from 1991

Provide religious information from 2001

As you will be aware records of all three categories have not always been recorded. We have some raw data sets that we can provide which may be of use, however they may not answer your queries.

Please let us if this would be helpful.

Best regards

Dear Mr Bell

Re:   Freedom of Information Act 2000 – Request for Information

Thank you for your clarification. Your request for information has now
been considered and I can provide the following response to your query:

I would be grateful if you could provide whatever information you have
concerning the age, ethnicity and religious persuasions of residents
within your local authority going back as far as records allow.  If you
have undertaken or are aware of projections of the same into the future
that would also be helpful.

I attach the datasets requested (age bands since 1981, ethnicity since
1991, and religion since 2001). We have also included data for our Black
Country neighbours (Dudley, Sandwell, Walsall), and the West Midlands and
England.

All of the main data requested is on the Overview tab of the spreadsheet.
The age data has been set into standard groups, so that they are
comparable. Detailed information about ages (including single year of age
data for 2011) is available on the respective tabs.

Please note 2 caveats:

1)    The population of Wolverhampton for 2001 differs depending on the
dataset chosen. Cells in Census tables from 2001 – but no other years –
have been randomly adjusted to avoid the release of confidential data.
Although ONS has not released details of how this has been carried out it
appears to result in figures below 4 being rounded to 3 or 0. This may
result in some confusing statistics where numbers are very small. Totals
in tables are the sum of cell values and, therefore, totals may vary from
table to table as a result of random adjustment. We normally report the
2001 Census population as being 236,582.

2)    The Ethnicity categories have changed a lot over time. In
particular, there was no Mixed Race group in 1991, which means the data is
not necessarily comparable to data from the 2011 Census. It is probable
that people who would consider themselves as being Mixed Race in later
Censuses would have defined themselves into 1 of 3 categories (Black
"Other", Asian "Other", Other "Other") in 1991. However, it is not
possible to establish what proportion of Mixed Race respondents would have
responded in this way. More detail about the genesis of the Mixed Race
category is in the attached report by Peter J Aspinall from the University
of Kent, however this document was not written on behalf of Wolverhampton
City Council directly.

Data cited in this response is all downloaded from NOMIS
([1]www.nomisweb.co.uk), an Office for National Statistics (ONS) site.
