Dear Mr Paddock

Re: Your request for information: 185620

4. The total number of trees pruned since 10/11/10

5. The average cost to the taxpayer of carrying out tree pruning work for
the most recent financial year.

6. Southwark Council's guidance issued to officials on the pruning of
trees.

The information that you requested is outlined below:

Q1. How many complaints have been received in relation to the dangerously
overhanging willow tree on Dunton Road, opposite the Longfield Estate.

Response: The Council has received 1 complaint regarding the Willow tree
in Dunton Road.

2. How many requests for tree pruning Southwark Council has received since
10/11/10

Response: We are unable to seperate the data from the dates required, but
I can confirm that the Council has received 744 requests for tree pruning
from 1st November 2010 to 31st December 2011.

3. The average time between receiving a complaint or request for pruning,
and the work being carried out.

Response: We are unable to give precise details of average time between
complaint and pruning as we do not hold this data. I can confirm he
following which may help you with your query:

Not all complaints result in pruning works being carried out; we would
make a judgement after an inspection.

All emergency works - as deemed by the Council - are undertaken within 2
hours of contact.

If works are considered to be necessary, works are scheduled to be
undertaken in the same month of the complaint, unless towards the end of
the month, then they may be scheduled in the following month.

If the works are necessary, but not not required to be undertaken in the
short term as above, they would be scheduled in terms of priority.

On average, works will be scheduled within 3 months of the complain.

Should the works not be considered as a priority, then the works will not
be undertaken until their normal pruning cycle, unless the priority
changes.

4. The total number of trees pruned since 10/11/10

Response: The Council has pruned 12,187 trees between 1st November 2010 to
31st December 2011.

5. The average cost to the taxpayer of carrying out tree pruning work for
the most recent financial year.

Response: We are unable to determine the exact average cost to the
taxpayer, however the budget for tree pruning for the current finalcial
year (2011/12) is £797,000 which includes tree planting and tree felling.
This budget is for tree works on Southwark Highways (not Red Routes or
Private highway), Southwark Housing and Parks & Open Spaces. The figure
for overheads which is made up of staff, It systems and administraction
for 2011/12 is £136,791.

6. Southwark Council's guidance issued to officials on the pruning of
trees.

Response: The Tree Management Strategy is used as guidance to officials
and is also available on the website via the following link.
