Dear Ms Smith

Re.: Freedom of Information request - Tree Maintenance on Red Route

Thank you for your e-mail received by Transport for London (TfL) on
November 16 2009. You asked for information about tree maintenance on
Seven Sister’s Road (A503), between St. Ann’s Road (B152) and Amhurst
Park (A107), N15.

Your request has been considered under the requirements of the Freedom of
Information Act. I can confirm that TfL holds some of the information you
require.

Our Plane trees along the aforementioned section of road have been for the
past five years, and are currently, scheduled to be inspected for defects
annually; with a full survey every five years. Any issues arising from
these inspections are noted and attended to by our contractors in due
course.

Please see below for the months in which the inspections were undertaken;
regrettably, we are unable to establish when the inspections were
undertaken in 2005:

September 2004
September 2006
2005 unavailable
October 2007
November 2008
November 2009

You may be interested to know that a full five year condition survey will
be undertaken next year, 2010.

Additionally, we undertake weekly and monthly
carriageway/pavement-specific inspections. However, any safety-related
concerns with our trees are also highlighted and addressed accordingly.

Dear Transport for London,
Attn: Gilmore Barrett
Ref- Tree maintenance on Seven Sisters Road, ref 548599

I have been given your details by Patricia Mitchell in relation to my request above. The information currently provided relates to the dates of
inspection of plane trees on the Seven Sisters Rd /Amhurst Rd junction

I note the following two comments:-

" Any issues arising from these inspections are noted and attended to by our contractors in due course. "

"Additionally, we undertake weekly and monthly carriageway/pavement-specific inspections. However, any safety-related concerns with our trees are also highlighted and addressed accordingly."

Please would you advise on what actual maintenance has been noted and then undertaken by your contractors - I assume that if none has been carried out TfL do not consider any of the trees on this stretch of road to be a hazard to road users or residents alike? Is there a time limit for issues to be addressed in? I would anticipate that some maintenance should have been undertaken in the last five years to ensure that overhanging branches etc were not impeding road users and home owners....

I look forward to your reply

Yours faithfully,

A Smith

Dear Ms Smith

Thank you for your further email received by TfL on 16 December 2009. You
asked for information about tree maintenance on the A503 Seven Sisters
Road.

Your request has been considered under the requirements of the Freedom of
Information Act and I can confirm that TfL does hold some of the
information you require; however, we have no records of any tree work
carried out prior to 2007. Any work highlighted in the inspections for
the A503 would have been undertaken by the Route Stewards, who no longer
work for TfL. We therefore do not hold records from this time.

In 2007, the removal of epicormic growth was ordered. Epicormic growth are
shoots which grow from underneath the bark of a tree, usually as a result
of environmental stress, injury or disease. They have to be removed to
allow the healthy growth of the tree. This work was undertaken that year
over the summer/early autumn. For your reference, I have attached the
instruction that was issued to the contractor in 2007 to undertake this
work.

Following the inspection in 2008, no maintenance work was required. The
2009 survey also recommended no work be undertaken.

When the tree inspectors find maintenance work is required, they state a
time frame within which it should be undertaken. This is then recorded in
the draft works order. The time limit for works to be carried out depends
on the severity of the risk posed. In the case of all work to these trees
in 2007, that risk was low and therefore the works time limit was within
the next 12 month period.

If this is not the information you are looking for, please contact Gilmore
Barrett, Correspondence Support Manager - London Streets, at

appeal as well as information on copyright and what to do if you would
