I would like to obtain information regarding the treatment regime for known haemochromatosis patients in the care of your health authority.
Specifically

1) Between 1st March 2019 and 1st March 2020 how many known haemochromatosis patients were receiving venesection treatment ?

2) Between 1st March 2020 and 31st December 2021 how many known haemochromatosis patients, previously receiving venesection, have received no venesection treatment for their condition?

3) Between 1st March 2019 and 31st December 2021 how many known haemochromatosis patients, previously receiving venesection, have received 1-4 venesection treatments for their condition?

4) Before 1st March 2020 what criterion/criteria was used to triage haemochromatosis patients for venesection treatment ?

5) Between 1st March 2020 and 31st December 2021 what criterion/criteria was used to triage known haemochromatosis patients for venesection treatment ?

6) Between 1st March 2020 and 31st December 2021 what procedure/ methodology was used to ensure that any clinical database of haemochromatosis patients’ blood levels was accurately maintained and updated?

Information (Scotland) Act 2002 (FOI(S)A) for Haemochromatosis patients.

 

NHS Fife has completed our search for information held in relation to your
request and can provide the following response.

 

Notes:

Haemochromatosis = ICD10 diagnosis code of E83.1

Venesection = ICD10 procedure code of X36.2

 

1) Between 1st March 2019 and  1st March 2020 how many known
haemochromatosis patients were receiving venesection treatment? 

NHS Fife discharged 287 patients with a diagnosis of E83.1 whose primary
procedure was X36.2.

 

2) Between 1st March 2020 and 31st December 2021 how many known
haemochromatosis patients, previously receiving venesection, have received
no venesection treatment for their condition?

Of the 287 patients identified above, 252 were discharged by NHS Fife
between 01/03/2020 and 31/12/2021 with a diagnosis of E83.1, of these 7
did not receive the primary procedure of X36.2.

 

3) Between  1st March 2019 and 31st December 2021, how many known
haemochromatosis patients, previously receiving venesection, have received
1-4 venesection treatments for their condition?

NHS Fife discharged 410 different patients with a diagnosis of E83.1 whose
primary procedure was X36.2. Of these, 379 were further discharged at
least twice with the same diagnosis and primary procedure meaning they
were then known to have previously received procedure X36.2. Of these 379
patients, 75 went on to be further discharged with the same diagnosis and
primary procedure between 1 to 4 times. 304 went on to be further
discharged with the same diagnosis and primary procedure 5 or more times.

 

4) Before 1st March 2020 what criterion/criteria was used to triage
haemochromatosis patients for venesection treatment ?

was used to triage known haemochromatosis patients for venesection

Consultants have always made decisions on whether to venesect or not in
concordance with the BSH guidelines.

 

5) Between 1st March 2020 and 31st December 2021 what criterion/criteria
was used to triage known haemochromatosis patients for venesection
treatment?

6) Between 1st March 2020 and 31st December 2021 what
procedure/methodology  was used to ensure that any clinical  database of
haemochromatosis patients’ blood levels was accurately maintained and
updated?

NHS Fife does not have a clinical database held for haemochromatosis
patients.
