Transfer to year 4 (clinical phase, medicine)

We're waiting for A. Sing to read a recent response and update the status.

Dear University College London,

I'd like to enquire whether there were any transfers to the clinical phase (year 4) at UCL's MBBS in the last three years (2020-2023). In addition, could you provide the number of transfers (if any) and how many were from non-Oxbridge medical schools?

In addition, for the 2024 intake (September), are any transfers planned to year 4 of UCL's MBBS?

Yours faithfully,

A. Sing

Finance.FOI Requests, University College London

Dear A

We have completed the compilation of information in response to your
request.

We can confirm that we do hold information of the description specified in
your request and this information is provided below.

Number of transfer-in students to year 4 of MBBS:

• 2020: ≤5
• 2021: ≤5
• 2022: ≤5

Please note, the information about which institution these students had
previously studied at on an MBBS is not generally stored on UCL’s student
record system, however if helpful, of those that are recorded the transfer
in students are from universities other than Oxford or Cambridge.

In terms of future transfer-in, there are currently no plans to have
transfer in students to the MBBS in 2023 and 2024.

As you will see above, where the number of transfer-in students is 5 or
fewer (indicated by the symbol ≤5), we have not provided the exact figure
because, with such low numbers even providing this information without
names, it may be possible to identify the individuals, which would make
this personal data of third parties or, if linked with other personal
identifiers in the public domain, would be likely to become personal data.
This information has been withheld under Section 40(2) of the FOIA by
virtue of Section 40(3A)(a).

Section 40(2) of the FOIA allows a public authority to withhold
information under the FOIA where (i) the requested information is personal
data relating to someone other than the requester and (ii) its disclosure
would breach any of the Data Protection principles. In this case, we
believe that the requested information could relate to and identify
individuals and therefore would be personal data. The disclosure of these
personal data would not be within the reasonable expectations of the
individuals concerned and it would be unfair to do so; this therefore
breaches the first Data Protection principle.

As the Section 40(2) exemption is an absolute one, there is no need to
conduct a public interest test.

for non-commercial research purposes. The information may also be used for
the purposes of news reporting. However, any other type of re-use, for
example by publishing or issuing copies to the public, will require the
permission of the copyright owner.
