Train planning and operational data request

Peter Hicks made this Freedom of Information request to Network Rail Limited This request has been closed to new correspondence. Contact us if you think it should be reopened.

The request was successful.

Dear Network Rail Limited,

Could you please supply the following train planning and operational related data:

1. A copy of the Timetable Planning Rules in XML format, also called the 'Assurable Database' or Attune - along with an XML Schema Definition (XSD) if available. For clarity, these are not the PDFs published on the Network Rail website, but the data used to calculate compliance with junction margins and minimum platform reoccupation times, etc.

2. A list of all train Service Codes, their descriptions, their Service Group and the description of the service group for any date in the 2020-21 financial year - this may be readily available from the PSS Data Warehouse via SAP BI

3. A copy of the TOPS table D4021 containing a list of STANOX (station number), STANME (station name) and STAABB (station abbreviation) for all current TOPS Responsibility Areas (TRAs) - this may be readily available from an AB enquiry on TOPS

4. A copy of the relevant source code of, and any referenced data used in calculations for, the TSBU (Mileage Enquiry) transaction within the TOPSCICS environment

If the costs of complying with this request exceed the cost limit under FOI, please action as many as you can in the order they are listed.

Yours faithfully,

Peter Hicks

Dear Danielle

Thank you for your response. In reply to the clarification regarding question 4 - I am looking for the data underlying the TSBU enquiry. I am not certain if the data is held as a set of mileages between individual STANOX, or whether the data is held as a network 'graph' (see https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Directed_g...).

For example, if the data were held as a set of mileage between each pair of STANOX seen in schedules from TSI, then I would expect there to be a figure for 72410-72136, 72136-72135 and 72135-72268 (these are Euston to Camden South Junction, Camden South Junction to Camden Junction, and Camden Junction to Willesden West London Junction), with no direct figure for 72410-72136 as trains between Euston and Willesden West London Junction must be timed at Camden South Junction. If the data were held as a graph, I would expect a figure for 72410-72268 not to be held explicitly in the data, but calculated by summing the three STANOX pairs.

Should the data be held as a set of individual pairs, then this part of the request can be narrowed to a list of STANOX pairs and the distances between them as defined in the data set used by TSBU. However, if the data is held as a network, then the source code for the TSBU enquiry on CICS will probably be required to understand how the mileages are calculated.

I realise this is going deep in to technical details, and I am therefore happy to talk on the phone next week to discuss this part of the request.

Best wishes,

Peter Hicks
