Trading Standards Unsafe Toys

Emma Lowther made this Freedom of Information request to Hertfordshire County Council

Automatic anti-spam measures are in place for this older request. Please let us know if a further response is expected or if you are having trouble responding.

Response to this request is long overdue. By law, under all circumstances, Hertfordshire County Council should have responded by now (details). You can complain by requesting an internal review.

Dear Hertfordshire County Council,

it is my understanding that Hertfordshire County Council is the primary authority on trading standards for Amazon.

How do you regulate children’s toys sold on Amazon, to ensure that they are safe?

What is done if a toy is found to be unsafe?

Yours faithfully,

Emma Lowther

Our Response

Your request for information has been considered under the Freedom of
Information Act 2000 I can confirm that Hertfordshire County Council does
not hold all the information you have requested, and can respond as
follows:-

The service does not hold specific information or documentation on how it
regulates children’s toys sold via the Amazon marketplace.

However, we are happy to explain that the service discharges statutory
duties under Toy Safety Regulations in a number of ways to include (not
exhaustively); market surveillance, product testing, liaison with local
authority and central government partners, response to complaints and
business support. The service has a published enforcement policy titled
‘[1]Our approach to Enforcement’ contained on our website which sets out
how the service will consider a range of options to protect the public
including what action will be considered when a product is found to be
unsafe. Where information is received relating to one of our Primary
Authority partners having supplied unsafe Toys, the process is the same
and we work closely with that business to ensure compliance with statutory
obligations and take appropriate corrective action.

If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact me, quoting
the reference above. To find out more about Freedom of Information, please

This will be carried out by a member of the County Council Legal Services
Team, who has had no prior involvement with the request. Requests for an
internal review should be sent to the Information Governance Unit at the
address above.

If you are unhappy with the outcome of the internal review you are
entitled to ask the Information Commissioner to investigate your

Commissioner's Office, Wycliffe House, Water Lane, Wilmslow, Cheshire, SK9
