Total net spending on housing homeless applicants in temporary accommodation

Response to this request is long overdue. By law, under all circumstances, Croydon Borough Council should have responded by now (details). You can complain by requesting an internal review.

Dear FOI Team,

I write to make an amended request for information relating to the total NET (rather than gross) spending on the provision of temporary accommodation for those registering as homeless made by this council between the years 2015 and 2021

As part of this request I would like the information to be broken down into the following:

(i) The number of people placed into temporary accommodation after making a homeless application, broken down into year-by-year;

(ii) The average length of stay in temporary accommodation after making a homeless application;

(iii) The five longest periods of stay in temporary accommodation after making a homeless application;

(v) The total cost of temporary accommodation to the council, broken down into costs per night, per month and per year.

Yours faithfully,

Oliver Murphy

Dear Croydon Council,

I am grateful for your message, and apologise for not making the definition explicit within my request. I can confirm that I am referring to emergency accommodation, rather than temporary accommodation.

Yours sincerely,

Oliver Murphy

Dear Croydon Council,

I note that you have still not confirmed or denied whether the authority holds this information within the statutory 20 working-day period, nor applied an exemption that would remove this obligation.

Section 1(1) of the FOI Act states that "Any person making a request for information to a public authority is entitled to be informed in writing by the public authority whether it holds information of the description specified in the request".

I would be grateful if you could clarify whether or not this information is held, or specify which exemption of the duty to confirm or deny you are applying.

Yours sincerely,

Oliver Murphy

Croydon Council,

Dear Oliver Murphy

Please again accept our apologies for the delay in responding to your
request.  Unfortunately we have been unable to provide a response sooner
due to resourcing issues. The pandemic and the Councils financial
situation has had a significant impact on the Council staffing numbers and
resources including the service which covers Freedom of Information and
Environmental Information requests and therefore, this has lead to a
serious backlog of work.

Please be assured that the Council are taking steps to improve this
situation and your request has not been ignored. We can confirm that the
relevant service who hold this information are working on your request and
are aware of the urgency and that it is now overdue. We are monitoring its
progress and as soon as we receive this information from them we forward
this onto you.

Again please accept our apologies for this delay.
