The voiceover artists used for the automated announcements on the Class 800 and Class 801 fleet of trains.

London North Eastern Railway Limited did not have the information requested.

Dear London North Eastern Railway Limited,

I would like to request the names of the two voiceover artists that are used for the automated announcements on the 800/801 fleet. There is a female voice that does the main announcements such as where the train is going and where it is calling and there is a male voice who does the safety announcements and additional information announcements. Both of them have been used since the 800/801 fleet entered service. I think you should know who they are as you would have had to hire these two professional voice over artists to record the automated announcements. Thank you for your help.

Yours faithfully,

Stuart Davies

Hi Stuart
I’ll ask about the male, but someone has asked us before about the female.
If you search for voiceover on what do they know it should have the link
to her professional profile. If search doesn’t work, I’ll find you the
exact request in the morning
Thanks
Abigail

Dear FOI,

Thank you for your reply. Sorry i should searched first to see if any other requests were made. I just searched on the What Do They Know website and found a request by somebody else where you mentioned Justine Harris is the name of the female voiceover. I found her website online now too. So that is perfect. If you are still able to find out who the male voiceover artist is that is used alongside her that would be great. Thank you for your help with this information.

Yours sincerely,

Hi Stuart

To follow up on the male voice, we do not hold the information.

The explanation provided by my colleague is below:

The male voice was recorded when we were Virgin along with a different female voice, and even then it was all arranged by the (then) joint VT West Coast and East Coast design manager as I believe it's the same voice as was used on the Virgin West Coast fleet.

When we became LNER the sounds had already been supplied to Hitachi and were being loaded onto the trains as they were built.

The Virgin West Coast female voice was WAY too bubbly and enthusiastic sounding for the LNER brand so we negotiated changing that to Justine (the voice we have now), but the male voice was fine so we left him alone.

We have carried out a search but nothing has come up – if someone somewhere has a lightbulb moment I will let you know

Kind regards

Abigail

Dear FOI,

Thank you for the reply and explanation. Although you do not know the name that is still very interesting to hear. I had not realised the male voice on LNER is the same male voice that is used on Avanti/Virgin too. But listening and comparing the announcements now it is indeed. Yes i agree that Avanti/Virgin lady is far too bubbly and enthusiastic for train announcements. Her voice is much better suited to television adverts than train announcements. Justine Harris is a lot better for announcements. I might email Avanti and see if they know who the male voice is. Thank you anyway for looking in to this. Have a good christmas and new year

Yours sincerely,

Stuart Davies
