The quality of the RPI

The request was refused by Bank of England.

Dear Bank of England,

The Governor was quoted this week as saying that the RPI was "meritless". Can you please let me see the documents that he will have seen that allowed him to come to that conclusion?

Yours faithfully,

Simon Briscoe

Dear Enquiries,

Thank you for the reply.

I do think that the description "meritless" and the word "errors" are stronger than words the ONS has used. The documents you list do not go that far. The Governor went further than the National Statistician.

Also, the RPI should not be covered by the exemption you note as RPI is expressly not the measure used in monetary policy - and has not been for many years.

I conclude that there must be something else that drives the Governor's thinking. Woudl you please share that with me?

Yours sincerely,

Simon Briscoe
