The impact of the Travelling Community on public finances in Merton

The request was partially successful.

Dear Merton Borough Council,

Having witnessed over recent months various incidents of
unauthorised occupation of public and private land by the travelling community, I would like to make an information request under the Freedom of Information Act.

Specifically I would like to know the following for the last three financial years broken down by year –

a) How many times the council were contacted over the occupation of land (public or private) by the travelling community and what types of land have been occupied (eg. car parks, public parks, fields etc.)

b) The total amount spent by the council per year on legal services to address issues of illegal occupation of public land by the travelling community.

c) The total amount spent by the council per year to repair and secure public land following an eviction such as but not limited to the replacement of barriers, fencing or locks etc.

d) The total amount spent by the council per year for the removal of rubbish etc. left behind on public land and the cost of land fill tax incurred for it's disposal.

Yours faithfully,

S Harris

foi, Merton Borough Council
