The BBC and the Twitter blue verification award

Peter Martin made this Freedom of Information request to British Broadcasting Corporation

This request has been closed to new correspondence from the public body. Contact us if you think it ought be re-opened.

British Broadcasting Corporation did not have the information requested.

Dear British Broadcasting Corporation,

I have in the past attempted to unravel BBC staff and editorial relationships with unaccountable overseas social media entities, though sadly mostly intercepted by the blanket 'purposes of' exemption/denial.

I try again, this time using a specific topical story, as featured by the BBC here:

https://www.bbc.com/news/amp/technology-...

The headline itself intrigues: "Far-right accounts lose Twitter verified tick".

And hence inspires questions:

1) What BBC official accounts have the Twitter verification?

2) What BBC staff, BBC-branded accounts have the Twitter verification?

3) If none do, does that mean they are at risk of not being BBC accounts?

4) Of any that do not, does that mean they are right wing? Or left wing?

5) Given the headline above inference, if any do, does that in turn infer that any that retain Twitter verification are hence left-wing accounts?

I will perhaps ask of BBC Editorial or Complaints why the BBC, in this piece, views 'extremism' only through the prism of being a right wing phenomenon. Apparently.

Yours faithfully,

Peter Martin

Dear FOI Enquiries,

I asked:

1) What BBC official accounts have the Twitter verification?
2) What BBC staff, BBC-branded accounts have the Twitter verification?
3) If none do, does that mean they are at risk of not being BBC accounts?
4) Of any that do not, does that mean they are right wing? Or left wing?
5) Given the headline above inference, if any do, does that in turn infer that any that retain Twitter
verification are hence left-wing accounts?"

You have replied:

"Under section 1(1) of the Act, I can confirm that the BBC does not hold your requested information."

This seems less than likely. Especially when it comes to BBC-branded accounts

1) Are you saying the BBC does not check, and hence have logged, all BBC accounts that are twitter verified?

"Twitter verification is conducted by Twitter not the BBC."

The BBC is content to leave its reputation in the hands of a foreign commercial aggregator? One whose security has already been breached from within?

Interesting.

Yours sincerely,

Peter Martin
