That's why mum goes to Iceland: Shameless mother stole £17,000 of supermarket vouchers meant for prize-winning youngsters
Dear First Choice Homes Oldham,
That's why mum goes to Iceland: Shameless mother stole £17,000 of supermarket vouchers meant for prize-winning youngsters
A shameless mother of two pocketed £17,000 worth of gift vouchers meant for successful students and blew them on shopping sprees at Iceland.
Council worker Susan Rathmill, 42, stole the £50 prizes after she was tasked with sending them to teenage students who successfully completed NVQ modules in childcare.
Over a two-year period she amassed spent nearly £17,000 in vouchers which can be cashed in at retailers including John Lewis, Debenhams, Marks and Spencer and a number of restaurants.
But the court heard how Rathmill used them to buy hauls of frozen food for her family from the chain whose slogan is 'That's why mums to go to Iceland'.
She also cashed in vouchers at a Bensons for Beds store and to cover her tracks she forged the signatures of students on receipts to falsely claim they had received the cash.
In most cases, the youngsters who passed their modules had no idea they were entitled to the vouchers and went empty-handed.
At Minshull Street Crown Court in Manchester, Rathmill, who was said to show 'genuine remorse', admitted six counts of theft from an employer, taking a total of £16,818.
She was given 16 months in prison, suspended for one year, and ordered to carry out 180 hours of unpaid work.
She was also ordered to be tagged under a four-month electronically monitored curfew between the hours of 9pm and 6am.
Earlier, the court heard that Rathmill had been employed by Oldham Council since 1995 and was working as a Children's Workplace Development Consultant when she started stealing in February 2011.
The £50 high street vouchers from the Love2Reward site had been introduced as an incentive to those who passed modules at Oldham College, a further education facility for over-16s.
