Thames Path - Land Ownership, Width and Maintenance

The request was successful.

Dear Greenwich Borough Council,

Planning Board documents associated with 22/3460/F at paragraph 13.16, dated 7th February 2023, identified that RBG own the Thames Path, and that the Thames Path is Public Highway.

Does RBG own all the Thames Path around the Greenwich Peninsula from the Old Naval College to Lombard Wall?

It was later suggested that RBG only owns the surface of the Thames Path and not the land beneath.

Who is responsible for maintaining the Thames Path surface?

Recent new developments around the Greenwich Peninsula have created wide pedestrian and cycle routes on the Thames Path.

From the Local Plan policies where new development takes place, what dimension of Thames Path width is required?

Yours faithfully,

Ralph Hardwick

Dear Mr Hardwick

Environmental Information Regulations request:  EIR-71665

Thank you for your request dated 09 February 2023

Our response is as follows:

Does RBG own all the Thames Path around the Greenwich Peninsula from the
Old Naval College to Lombard Wall?

No. Royal Greenwich does not maintain the section outside the Royal Naval
College, and short sections between Pelton Road and Telegraph Avenue may
come into our ownership, subject to a legal agreement being finalised

It was later suggested that RBG only owns the surface of the Thames Path
and not the land beneath.

Who is responsible for maintaining the Thames Path surface?

Royal Greenwich maintains the surface except the section outside the Royal
Naval College and short sections between Pelton Road and Telegraph Avenue
which are subject to a legal agreement being finalised. These are
maintained separately by the developers and the Royal Naval College.

Recent new developments around the Greenwich Peninsula have created wide
pedestrian and cycle routes on the Thames Path.

From the Local Plan policies where new development takes place, what
dimension of Thames Path width is required?

There is no formal width for new sections. However, our usual practice is
to specify a shared cycle path and footpath which can be around 3 metres
in width.

If you have any queries about this correspondence, please contact me,
