Dear Mr Baxevanis

TfL Ref:  FOI-0391-1213

Thank you for your email received by Transport for London (TfL) on 8 June
2012 asking for information about TfL cycling research.

Your request has been considered under the requirements of the Freedom of
Information Act 2000 and TfL’s information access policy. I can confirm
that TfL does hold the information you require.

1.    What is the purpose of the survey, i.e. what specific
data/statistics you expect to receive at the end of the survey

The purpose of the survey is to build on extensive existing research and
data, to further understand how road users interpret and respond to the
blue road markings used on the Cycle Superhighways routes. In particular,
how do the blue markings affect cyclist and driver behaviour in a range of
road layouts?

Detailed analysis will be conducted covering all variables in the survey.

2.    What are your plans for using this data to influence cycling policy?

The research findings will feed into the wider evidence base used to
inform the ongoing process of reviewing existing infrastructure and
informing the design of future routes, as well as informing the design and
delivery of supporting measures and safety information campaigns.

3.    A copy of the full questionnaire used in the survey including the
videos used as part of some questions

Please note that copyright restrictions apply to the survey design and
videos. Due to these restrictions we are unable to make these available to
you via this site.  Please can you provide us with your personal email
address so that we can arrange for you to have access to this information.
Our direct contact details are shown at:
[1]http://www.tfl.gov.uk/foi/default.aspx

4.    The method that was used for selecting participants for this survey
i.e. who the invitation was sent to and how this was decided

The survey sample has been drawn from two sources:

·         The Research Now panel – the survey was sent to registered
members of the Research Now panel based on their normal selection process,
ensuring a balance of respondents by place of residence. Respondents were
‘in scope’ for the survey if they have either cycled or travelled by car
as a driver in London in the past month. Respondents who had travelled by
both car as driver and cycle were randomly assigned to one category and
only asked questions about travel by that mode.

·         TfL’s customer database - customers who have registered with TfL
and expressed an interest in cycling or are registered members of the
Barclays Cycle Hire Scheme and have agreed to take part in research.

5.    Any other documentation that TfL sent to Research Now about the
creation and administration of this survey

Research Now have conducted this research as the fieldwork sub-contractor
to TfL’s lead supplier, Steer Davies Gleave (SDG). TfL have therefore had
no direct contact with Research Now.

6.    How much TfL has paid Research Now to create and administer this
survey

As stated above, Research Now have conducted this research as the
fieldwork sub-contractor to TfL’s lead supplier, Steer Davies Gleave
(SDG). TfL have therefore not paid Research Now directly for this
research.

If this is not the information you are looking for please do not hesitate
to contact me.

If you are not satisfied with this response please see the attached
information sheet for details of your right to appeal.

Yours sincerely
