Tescos' breach of planning conditions
Dear Stockport Metropolitan Borough Council,
Many years ago Tesco built a new superstore in the borough that blatantly ignored the planning conditions that they had agreed to. After much tooing and froing it was agreed that they wouldn't be required to demolish the extra space, but they were not to use it for anything.
My request is to know whether you are continuing to enforce that agreement with unannounced visits by council staff, which I have a recollection of discovering was your strategy, though I can't find the FOI I thought it was laid out in.
Yours faithfully,
John Davidson

Our response:
We are continuing to monitor the operation of the store. This has recently
been magnified by the following planning applications that are seeking to
utilise the void space and introduce up to 6 independent retail operators to
trade from the store as concessions – see planning applications ref: DC/081572
and DC/081571 which can be viewed online here:
[1]https://www.stockport.gov.uk/find-planni...
You will note that these planning applications have been active since July
2021 and decisions have not yet been made due to extensive discussions,
requests for additional information and detailed analysis. During
consideration of the applications, a number of unannounced visits to the store
have been made to establish the facts and monitor compliance with the existing
planning permissions"
