Temporary absence

The request was partially successful.

Dear Department for Work and Pensions,

What are the recent policy changes or discussions held within the Department for Work and Pensions surrounding temporary absence from the UK due to airlines cancelling flights and closed borders?

One of the conditions to be entitled to Universal Credit is to be in Great Britain. There are relevant exceptions to extend a temporary absence by an additional month. However, these exceptions have not taken into consideration the pandemic and how many airlines have substantially delayed or cancelled flights back to Great Britain.

What is the DWP's SPECIFIC policy/legal stance on this emerging concern and how has this been developed since Covid-19 began. There are many people stranded abroad or have been who are having their Universal Credit entitlement ended because they cannot get back in the month time limit.

Yours faithfully,

George Cross
