Telephone scammers

The request was refused by Sussex Police.

Dear Sussex Police,

My mother is 95 and vulnerable. She lives in supported housing in Hurstpierpoint. Last week she received a number of telephone calls from people attempting to obtain information from her that would allow them to access her ban account and/or her credit card details. This has become a fairly regular occurrence.

I would like to know, please:

1. How many active investigations does Sussex Police have ongoing regarding the use of the telephone in an attempt to commit fraud or obtain a pecuniary advantage by deception, or any similar related offence?

2. How many prosecutions has the force brought, in the past 12 months, in relation to the use of the telephone to attempt an offence of this type?

3. How many of those prosecutions have succeeded?

4. What representations has the force made to telecoms providers to seek to prevent such calls?

Yours faithfully,

Dr Phil Back

Dear Phil,

Thank you for your request which was received by Sussex Police.

This request will be dealt with under the terms of the Freedom of Information Act 2000 and you will receive a response within the statutory timescale of 20 working days as defined by the Act, from the date of receipt. Some requests may also require either full or partial transference to another public authority in order to answer your query in the fullest possible way. Again, you will be informed if this is the case.

Please Note:
Sussex Police are currently receiving a high volume of FOI requests at a time of reduced staffing levels to process them. Every effort is being made to comply with the statutory 20 working day response deadline but on occasions this may not be possible – we apologise for the inconvenience this may cause.

Yours sincerely
