Dear FOI,
Thank you for your reply advising me that “Network Rail is responsible for mainline infrastructure, rather than Transport for London (TfL)”.

Chairlock point motors were used on what was LT Underground several decades prior to the inception of TfL My F.O.I. request refers to Chairlock Point Motors, as used on London Transport Underground in the 1960s, 1970s and 1980s etc., not those used on the main line. I apologise if I had created confusion in my original request by not stating this. Can you therefore please look again for the drawings I requested.

Yours sincerely,

Alan Taylor

I would highly recommended searching the online archives catalogue using
various search terms. You may wish to search the online catalogue for
signalling diagrams or drawings from the date range you are interested in.
The term ‘chairlock’ may not feature in the catalogue description
(sometimes cataloguing archivists may not go into this level of detail due
to time), but a physical look at the records in our Reading Room could
reveal drawings of the technology. It is hard to say for certain though.
The catalogue can be found:

[1]http://www.tflcorporatearchivescatalogue...

Information on how to search our catalogue can be found under the How to
Search and Further Help with Searching tabs.

Visiting researchers can also access searchable digital surrogates of
staff magazines, 1914-1995. I have performed a search over the digitised
versions of the staff magazines and ‘chairlock’ features in 2 editions,
one from 1960 and one from 1959. The article from 1959 features an image
of a chairlock point – no drawings I am afraid. You are more than welcome
to access these onsite in our Reading Room, or I can send you a digital
copy of the article(s) via email, but would initially need you to fill in
a copyright declaration stating that you are attaining the image(s) for
personal/private and non commercial reasons only. Let me know if you would
like me to do this.

TfL Corporate Archives is located within TfL Headquarters in St James’s
Park Station, 55 Broadway, SW1H 0BD. As our archives are stored off site
and due to space restrictions, researchers are required to book an
appointment in advance, providing a list of all the items they wish to
consult. The archivist will then contact you with a list of future
appointments.

If you have any further questions or would like to book an appointment
please don’t hesitate to contact us.

Best wishes,

Zoe

Dear Corporate Archives,

Dear Zoe Fullard,

Thank you for taking the trouble to search through the archives. Although I am disappointed that you were directly unable to locate any of the drawings I requested your reply is most helpful. I would like to take up your kind offer of the digital copies you located. Should I telephone you to make the necessary arrangements?

Regards

Alan Taylor

I could ask you to complete the attached copyright declaration form for me to verify that you are attaining the image(s) for personal/private and non commercial reasons only. I have completed the relevant reference numbers on the form so just need you to read the declaration and if you are happy with the terms complete your details and sign. Dear Corporate Archives,

I sent my completed declaration form by post over a week ago but not yet received the expected email with the information promised. Can you advise when this will be sent please?

Yours sincerely,

Dear Melissa McGreechan,

Thank you for the photocopies of the three articles. They make interesting reading. It is unfortunate that there are no drawings involved; I had intended to make scale working versions of the mechanisms, something that is not possible without the drawings.

Maybe one day I will be able to take up your kind offer to spend time and explore the archives.

Yours sincerely,

Alan Taylor
