Dear Waltham Forest College,

I am writing to make an Open Government request under the Freedom of Information Act 2000. To assist you with this request, I am outlining my query as accurately as possible. If, however, this request is too broad or unclear, I would be grateful if you could contact me as I understand that under the Act, you are required to advise and assist those who request information from you.

1. Do you expect your full-time English and Maths lecturers to hold a full teaching qualification, i.e. Level 5 Diploma in Education and Training (DET)?
2. Do you expect full-time English and Maths lecturers -delivering GCSE- to be qualified to at least one level above GCSE, i.e. A-level?
3. Since 2015, have you employed any unqualified part-time or full-time English or Maths lecturers on the basis that they complete DET?
4. Have any full or part-time unqualified English or Maths lecturers who have not completed a year of employment been accelerated to the qualified lecturer pay scale?

I understand that under the Act, I am entitled to a response within 20 working days. I would be grateful if you could confirm by email that you have received this request. I look forward to hearing from you shortly.

Yours faithfully,

P. Melville

Dear Waltham Forest College,

I am clarifying my FOI request
*Since 2015, have any full or part-time unqualified English or Maths lecturers who have not completed a year of employment been accelerated to the qualified lecturer pay scale?

Dear Waltham Forest College,

My request was referred to the Information Commissioner because the statutory deadline has passed.

Dear Waltham Forest College,

Could you kindly give me a time scale for submitting the information that you are currently unable to provide due to COVID, please? Many thanks.

On 9th April, I received the following response:

1. Do you expect your full-time English and Maths lecturers to hold a full teaching qualification, i.e. Level 5 Diploma in Education and Training (DET)?
Yes or to be prepared to study for this.

2. Do you expect full-time English and Maths lecturers -delivering GCSE- to be qualified to at least one level above GCSE, i.e. A-level?
Ideally yes but this is not always the case.

3. Since 2015, have you employed any unqualified part-time or full-time English or Maths lecturers on the basis that they complete DET?

Our Head of HR has confirmed that, due to the COVID-19 lockdown, she does not currently have access to files but it may be the case that we have employed unqualified part-time or full-time English or Maths lecturers on the basis that they complete DET.

4. Have any full or part-time unqualified English or Maths lecturers who have not completed a year of employment been accelerated to the qualified lecturer pay scale?

Unfortunately due to the COVID-19 lockdown, we do not currently have access to this information so are unable to provide a response to this question while the College remains closed and we work remotely.
Yours faithfully,

P. Melville
