Teacher Retention and Turnover Data
Dear Scottish Government,
I am writing to request information under the Freedom of Information (Scotland) Act 2002. Specifically, I would like to request data related to teacher retention, turnover, and the reasons why teachers are leaving the profession in Scotland.
Please provide the following information:
1. Teacher Retention and Turnover Data:
Data on teacher retention rates and turnover (attrition rates) in Scotland from 1st January 2018 to the present, broken down by:
• Permanent teachers
• Fixed-term teachers
• Supply teachers
2. Reasons for Leaving the Profession:
Any available reports or analysis that identify the reasons for teachers leaving the profession or having difficulty securing permanent employment, particularly in relation to:
• The availability of permanent positions
• Working conditions
• Pay or financial incentives
• The availability of supply work
If possible, please provide this data for each academic year from 2018 to the present.
Should the cost of processing this request exceed the statutory limit, please advise me on how I can narrow the scope to reduce the cost. I am happy to consider any suggestions to help facilitate the request.
Thank you for your time and assistance. I look forward to your response.
Yours faithfully,
James Orr

Dear Scottish Government,
Please pass this on to the person who conducts Freedom of Information reviews.
I am writing to request an internal review of Scottish Government's handling of my FOI request 'Teacher Retention and Turnover Data'.
As of today, I have not received any response, which is a breach of your statutory obligation under Section 10 of the Freedom of Information (Scotland) Act 2002. The Act requires a response to be provided promptly and within 20 working days.
I kindly request that you review this matter and provide a full response to my original request without further delay. Additionally, please include an explanation for the failure to comply with the statutory timeframe.
Should this matter remain unresolved, I will have no choice but to escalate the issue
Yours faithfully,
James Orr

Good afternoon,
Please firstly accept my apologies for the delay in responding to your FOI
enquiry reference: 202400438392 which we received on 29 October 2024.
Having looked into this FOI enquiry we identified that this was actually a
duplicate request of another FOI request from the same requester under FOI
reference: 202400438390 received the same day, 29 October 2024, which was
answered and issued on 25 November 2024.
We therefore withdrew FOI reference 202400438392 on its receipt.
I hope that this clarifies the situation?
Regards,
Kenny
