I would also like to know how much profit/loss was made daily by the Council on the event. Can you please provide, as a daily breakdown:

(i) The total profit or loss on Park and Ride;
(ii) The total profit on Car Parking charges;
(iii) The total profit on Food Licensing;

Dear Christopher Marshall,

I refer to your recent request for information under the Freedom of
Information Act 2000. I can confirm that the Council does hold this
information, as detailed below.

I would like to know the total profit/loss the Council have made as a
result of the Tall Ships event held in Sunderland last week. Please
provide this as a breakdown consisting of the total amount of money the
Council has put into the event and the end profit or loss for the Council.

I would also like to know how much profit/loss was made daily by the
Council on the event. Can you please provide, as a daily breakdown:

(i) The total profit or loss on Park and Ride;

(ii) The total profit on Car Parking charges;

(iii) The total profit on Food Licensing;

(iv) The total amount spent on hiring event staff (i.e. Stewards);

(v) Any other costs or profits incurred;

(vi) The total profit or loss;

The Tall Ships Event was delivered at a cost of £5.3m It is not possible
to provide detail on profit / loss on a daily basis.

Should any figures exist, can the Council also confirm how accurate the
initial evaluation of 1 million people visiting the city was, and how many
people actually arrived in the city for the purposes of visiting the Tall
Ships during all days of the event.

With all open air non ticketed events it is impossible to be accurate
regarding the number of people attending. It was estimated that there was
in the region of 1.2 million visitors to the event between the 10^th and
14th July 2018, this was agreed in consultation with a number key
organisations including emergency services, public transport providers and
ourselves as the event organiser.

Following a procurement exercise, NGI Solutions were commissioned to
evaluate the impact of The Tall Ships Races so that Sunderland City
Council were able to gain an insight into the economic impact of the
event, as well as details on the profiles of visitors to the event. 300
visitors were interviewed for their opinions on their visit. This sample
would give a confidence level of 955 and a margin of error of +/-5%.
Within this report it identified that The Tall Ships Races was the main
reason for visiting for 1 in 3 respondents.

I hope this is satisfactory. If, however, you are dissatisfied with our
response to your request for information, you can ask for the decision to
be reviewed in reply to this letter, however any request for review must
be submitted within 40 days of the date of this freedom of information
response. The review will be removed from the Directorate and coordinated
by the Council’s Information Governance Officer. A request for review
should be directed, by email to [1][Sunderland City Council request email],
by post or by hand addressed to; Information Governance Officer,
Governance Services, Civic Centre, PO Box 100, Sunderland SR2 7DN.

You are of course entitled to apply to the Information Commissioner at any
time, although the Commissioner will not usually investigate until the
public authority’s internal review procedure has been concluded.

Kind Regards

Angela
