Sustainability policy
- How your sustainability policy is enforced; and specifically, whether schools in your authority are allowed to make their own purchasing decisions, or whether these decisions have to be referred and checked for sustainability.
- If decisions have to be referred and checked, please can you tell me when this policy came into force.

Our Sustainability Policy is specifically for Events and Venues and is an annually reviewed document outlining our commitments as part of our ISO 14001 / ISO 20121 Environmental Management System.
It can be accessed here, along with the other Sustainable Event documents: http://www.brighton-hove.gov.uk/content/...
This is enforced through annual audit and by a Management Review Group which reviews exceptions and any potential areas where compliance can be improved.
Schools are largely allowed to make their own purchasing decisions, as they enjoy considerable financial independence from the local authority, with each school controlling its own budget. These school decisions do not have to be referred and are not checked for sustainability.
One exception is the school meals contract, which the council procures centrally for all of the 60 primary and special schools within the city. These are accredited to Bronze Food for Life Bronze catering Mark and from October this will be Silver. Food for Life is an audited standard certified by the Soil Association. Secondary schools make their own catering arrangements.
New minimum food buying standards, which have significant sustainability component, have recently been agreed by Policy & Resources Committee http://present.brighton-hove.gov.uk/Publ...
and will now be implemented.
