Surface water quality sampling results Hastings Alexandra Park catchment area

Chris Hurrell made this Freedom of Information request to Environment Agency Automatic anti-spam measures are in place for this older request. Please let us know if a further response is expected or if you are having trouble responding.

The request was successful.

Dear Environment Agency,

I have been using the excellent Water Quality data archive to review test results for water quality in Alexandra park Hastings. The park runs parralel to St Helens Road for much of its length.

Thereis an ongoing pollution incident in the upper reaches of the park stream with pollution in Old Roar Gill and downstream to the Buckshole reservoir and down through the Alexandra park stream. Pollution was first reported by residents in early May 2023 and is ongoing.

There are records on the Water Quality data archive for the East confluence for the recent pollution incident period.
https://environment.data.gov.uk/water-qu...

There are records on the Water Quality data archive for the West confluence for the recent pollution incident period.
https://environment.data.gov.uk/water-qu...

There are no other records for the areas affected by these incidents.
There is nothing else recorded on the Water Quality Data archive for these latest incidents.
In addition there is no data available prior to 2010.

Could you please please provide under EIR the following:

1. Surface water Quality test results for all tests carried out in the Alexandra Park park stream and its catchment area from January 2023 to date.

2. Surface water quality test results for the Alexandra Park catchment area prior to 2010.

Yours faithfully,

Chris Hurrell

Dear Environment Agency,

I have now escalated the delay in providing this information to the ICO.

Yours faithfully,

Chris Hurrell

Dear Environment Agency,

I have received the information via email thanks.

I have some points that require clarification that I have sent by email as described below:

Thanks for your email and the data.

Please clarify the following:

1. Surface water Quality test results for all tests carried out in the Alexandra Park stream and its catchment area from January 2023 to date.

The data provided in the first sheet titled "WQ - AT Sample points" seems to be EA data taken regularly in the park and is not data gathered because of the ongoing pollution incidents in the park stream since May 2023. Please confirm the data provided is the routine sampling tests taken in the park and not related to any pollution incidents.

The data provide in the second sheet titled "ad hocs within catchment" contains some data labelled "Dump Sussex" dated 15th May to 25th May 2023. Please confirm that this data was taken by the EA within the park watercourses. Please confirm these results were taken as a consequence of the pollution incidents in the park. If not taken by the EA please let me know the source of this data.

Southern Water have been testing water quality in the park streams since the pollution incidents were reported in May 23. Does the EA hold this data? Please confirm whether the EA holds this data. If the data is held please provide this data held by the EA.

Yours faithfully,

Chris Hurrell

Dear Environment Agency,

Have received a reply via email. Thanks for this information. I am now closing the request.

The email reply was:

Dear Chris,

Thank you for your email below. We respond to requests under the Freedom of Information Act 2000 and Environmental Information Regulations 2004.

Please find our responses to your questions below:

Please use the “Purp_Desc” column to identify samples that have been collected in response to a pollution incident. All samples with a “Purp_Desc” of "Unplanned Reactive Monitoring (Pollution Incidents)" or "Unplanned Reactive Monitoring Formal (Pollution Incidents)" will be associated to a pollution incident response; this applies to both the ‘WQ - at Sample points" and "Ad hocs within catchment" sheets.

All other reasons are associated with routine monitoring and/or planned investigations.

Please find attached a map which shows the location of the Ad-hocs collected in (May) 2023. You use the Sample ID to match the samples shown on the map to the samples within the ad-hocs tab of the previously provided spreadsheet.

Southern Water have been testing water quality in the park streams since the pollution incidents were reported in May 23. Does the EA hold this data? Please confirm whether the EA holds this data. If the data is held please provide this data held by the EA.

For information on any water quality data that Southern Water may have collected in response to the pollution incidents on Alexandra Park Stream, please contact Southern Water. Southern Water would hold such data and not the Environment Agency. Southern Water would also hold the license for such data and therefore control its release.

Please refer to the Open Government Licence which explains the permitted use of this information.

Rights of appeal

If you are not satisfied, you can contact us within 2 calendar months to ask for our decision to be reviewed.

Yours faithfully,

Chris Hurrell
