Supporting information regarding TRP's unheralded "2018 Archaeological Policy"
Dear The Royal Parks,
Richmond Park is a designated Archaeological Priority Area.
Following the dense planting of trees over part of the most conspicuous surviving piece of pre-emparkment ridge and furrow in Richmond Park in the spring of 2016, in despite of Tom Greeves’s 1992 Richmond Park Archaeological Survey, it subsequently transpired that other TRP works on sensitive sites within the Park had also neglected to take Greeves’ report into account. In particular watching briefs were not conducted where heavy duty mechanical excavators were employed in the excavation of ponds associated with known mesolithic assemblages.
To prevent any repetition of these unremedied oversights, in 2018 the Royal Parks apparently introduced a new overall Archaeological Policy, referenced briefly on page 30 of the award-winning Richmond Park Management Plan 2020-2029
https://www.royalparks.org.uk/__data/ass...
This policy does not appear anywhere on the TRP website contrary to the statement on page 19 of the above Plan.
These questions relate to that Policy:
What is the 2018 Archaeological Policy?
How is it worded?
Who was consulted in its preparation ?
Will it be published?
What robust protocols are now in place to support the Archaeological Policy?
What is the policy concerning archaeological watching briefs within the Royal Parks estate?
Who prepared the ”Archaeology” section of the Richmond Park Management Plan?
What were/are their qualifications for doing so?
Is there a formal TRP Archaeological Strategy to support the Archaeological Policy?
What plans are in place to survey those areas of Richmond Park which could not be surveyed by Dr Greeves because of dense rhododendron cover, which have now been cleared?
Have TRP considered joining the Heritage Alliance to benefit from their collective experience?
Have TRP considered retaining a consultant archaeologist to advise them in the future?
N.B. This request replaces the email request submitted to [email address] in October 2019 which remains unacknowledged/unanswered and earlier letters.
Yours faithfully,
John Lock
