Support for children who are suicidal - Mental health trust

I should like to request the following information about the emotional support and crisis services available to people under the age of 18 in Barking and Dagenham, which falls within the geographical remit of your organisation.
I would like to find out the following information about the services that you are commissioned to deliver in Barking and Dagenham to people under the age of 18 who are experiencing emotional distress and/or who are at risk of attempting suicide:
• Inclusion/exclusion criteria
• How the service is accessed, i.e. open access, self-referral, third party referral
• Channels of support, e.g. telephone, email, text, webchat, face-to-face, and types of location if face-to-face
• Opening hours/availability
• Type of support provided, i.e. structured therapeutic counselling, peer support, helpline
• If support is provided to parents or carers
• Length of support offered
• If the support is provided by paid employees, freelance/contract staff, volunteers.
• Intended outcomes for the service
• Number of people under 18 that can be supported i) at any one time and/or ii) in any given twelve month period
• Where relevant, number of people under 18 that have been referred to the service in the most recent reporting period (quarter or year)
• Number of people under 18 supported in the most recent reporting period (quarter or year)
For each service, I would also like to request a copy of their:
• Safeguarding policy
• Confidentiality policy
• Position statement on self-determination, decision making and choice

• Inclusion/exclusion criteria
NELFT’s Barking and Dagenham Child and Adolescent Mental Health Services
(CAMHS) is for anybody aged between 0-18 years, living in the London
Borough of Barking and Dagenham and free at the point of entry.
Any young person experiencing emotional, behavioural and/or mental health
problems, (or any parent, guardian, professional or teacher of a child who
is experiencing emotional wellbeing and mental health difficulties), may
access our service.
• How the service is accessed, i.e. open access, self-referral, third
party referral
ALL of these. We accept self-referral and professional referral. The first
step to getting help from CAMHS is usually that the young person will be
referred for a CAMHS assessment. This referral can come from the
parents/carers, a teacher, or a GP. B&D CAMHS accepts self-referrals. If
the young person is supported by social care, a youth offending team, or a
service at your school, they might also be able to refer.
• Channels of support, e.g. telephone, email, text, webchat,
face-to-face, and types of location if face-to-face
face to face primarily with option to offer, phone, messaging, video
calling. Face to face is offered in home setting, school settings, Axe St
or other health building, community settings such as youth centres, cafes,
parks – primary aim is to best meet the needs of the YP.
• Opening hours/availability
Monday – Friday 9-5pm for core community CAMHS, out of hours is provided
via a crisis support offer
• Type of support provided, i.e. structured therapeutic counselling, peer
support, helpline
Barking and Dagenham CAMHS offers a range of services varying from the use
of self-help and guided self-management to more in-depth psychological
treatments such as structured therapeutic support, counselling, advise and
signposting, EMDR, family interventions/work, etc . These are evidence
based and are delivered by highly skilled practitioners including child
and adolescent psychotherapists, counsellors, clinical psychologists,
counselling psychologists, family therapists and child, nurses, Looked
after Children’s’ Social worker, Mental Health practitioners, Support Time
and Resilience Workers, clinical and counselling psychologists and child
and adolescent psychiatrists. We are an established team with a wide range
of skilled clinicians who are passionate about providing a high standard
of intervention with the young people of Barking and Dagenham .

There is no cap on the maximum capacity that the service can support. We
know that there is an increased acuity, complexity, and demand on the
service. The service ensure that patients have timely access to the
service and managing patient flow. Over the last three years, the average
caseload of the service has been 817.

Confidentiality policy – see attached. This policy is currently under
review, staff will continue to follow the existing policy as our guidance
is where a policy has gone past its review date it will remain valid,
until it has been reviewed and the new one has been published.
• Position statement on self-determination, decision making and
choice
currently being reviewed and work in progress. The service is working
closely with participation group and NELFT patient experience team to
inform this. The team ensure that the Child and YP take an active part in
co-production and influencing positive change within the service. They are
also integral in informing their care and support plan and are at the
centre of decision making. The team ensure that the voice of the child is
recorded and considered. The team provides multidisciplinary assessment
and treatment for a wide range of child mental health problems for
children up to 18 years of age. The MDT work together to provide a
comprehensive service in line with the scientific evidence and
good-practice guidance and work with other professionals such as GPs,
schools, and Paediatricians in formulation of support plan and care.
