Supply of Sanitary Products upon leaving the EU

Department for Exiting the European Union did not have the information requested.

Dear Department for Exiting the European Union,

Raw produce for the production of sanitary products such as toilet roll, feminine care and incontinence products is imported into the UK for production at mills across the country. As an example, Essity run six mills across the country producing multiple branded products including own brand products for supermarkets with the raw paper material imported from Scandinavia. Similar is true of Kimberley Clark. Could the department please advise the following:

- What, if any, stockpiling of sanitary products such as toilet roll, feminine care products and nappies has taken place to date?

- What advice has been given by the department to producers (or vice versa) as to what potential stockpiling of these products may be required?

- What, if any, advice specific to this market has been given with regard to a standard level of buffer stock is currently available?

- What research has been made into the expected impact to the importing of raw materials for sanitary products in the event of different Brexit scenarios and in what, if any, scenarios would supply shortages be expected?

- Have any calculations been made as to the potential inflationary impact of the changing supply environment specific to these products in differing Brexit scenarios?

Yours faithfully,

Richard Wilson
