Dear Mr Pollard

Thank you for your request for information submitted under the Freedom of
Information Act (FOIA) and received 16 September 2015. You have requested
the following:

1.1 The number of organisations that have applied for charity status in
Sunderland annually since 1990

1.2 The number of organisations that have successfully applied for charity
status in Sunderland annually since 1990

1.3 The number of organisations that have applied for charity status
nationwide annually since 1990

1.4 The number of organisations that have successfully applied for charity
status nationwide annually since 1990

I will answer your queries in turn.

1.1  & 1.2    I should say at the outset that the database will not
provide any information about failed applications for charity status from
organisations with an area of operation of Sunderland. You will be able to
see how many charities with that area of operation were registered but not
how many were either failed or not progressed.   The publicly available
information from the Register of Charities is now freely available to
download from the Charity Commission website via the following link:

[1]http://data.charitycommission.gov.uk/def...

The Register is supplied as BCP unix compressed files. You will need to
have, or have on hand, expertise in creating a database into which the
records may be imported. If you are familiar with SQL information
management systems, you should have no difficulty with the file. Please
note that we are not able to offer further specific advice on how to
process the data. Once you have created your database you will be able to
search the register yourself for charities with an area of operation of
Sunderland.

There is also a way of accessing some of this information using the
'Advanced Search' function in our web register at:

[2]http://apps.charitycommission.gov.uk/sho...

* In the 'Search' field Select 'Registered and removed charities';
* In the 'Where the charity operates' field select 'Specific areas' and
select Sunderland from the picklist;
* In the 'Registration date' field you can select any period up to 12
months.

This will return a list of charities subject to a cap of 500. If you need
to get around the cap you need only shorten the period in the
'Registration date' field. Your search return will be a list of charities
which can be pasted into a separate table or spreadsheet.

1.3 & 1.4     Information about registration applications nationally has
been included in the Annual Reports of the Charity Commissioners since
1990. I am attaching PDFs of the relevant sections of our Annual Reports
from 1990 to 2008. You will also find links to past Annual Reports on our
website at:

[3]https://www.gov.uk/government/publicatio...

You may also be interested in our web archive which is deposited with the
National Archive at:

[4]http://webarchive.nationalarchives.gov.u...

Before the year 2012-13 the Annual Reports contained information about
successful registrations only. You will find that the Annual Reports for
2012-13, 2013-14 and 2014-15 do contain information about both
applications and registrations and make reference to the numbers of failed
applications.

I hope this is helpful but if you are unhappy with this response, you can
ask for it to be reviewed. Such requests should be submitted within three
months of the date of our response and should be addressed to:

Charity Commission P O Box 211 Bootle L20 7YX

Email: [5][email address]

More information about our FOIA review service can be found via the
following link on our website:
[6]http://www.charitycommission.gov.uk/medi....

If, after this, you remain unhappy with the decision, you may apply
directly to the Information Commissioner (ICO) for a decision. Generally,
the ICO cannot make a decision unless you have exhausted our review
procedure. The ICO can be contacted at:

The Information Commissioner’s Office, Wycliffe House, Water Lane,
Wilmslow, Cheshire SK9 5AF Email: [7][email address].

Yours sincerely
