Sun 24 May 2020 'The Best of the RHS Chelsea Flower Show' BBC1 at 5.50pm - withdrawn

The request was refused by British Broadcasting Corporation.

Christopher Whitmey

Dear British Broadcasting Corporation,

1. At what time on Sunday 24 May 2020 was the decision made to cancel the showing of 'The Best of the RHS Chelsea Flower Show' programme that was to air on BBC1 at 5.50pm?

2. Who made that decision?

3. What were the reasons for that decision?

4. Did any request from the Government influence that decision?

5. What were the viewing figures for the previous evening's 'RHS Chelsea Flower Show'?

6. What were the viewing figures for 'Garden Rescue' at 6.20pm on 24 May 2020?

7. In view of the week's sequence of 'RHS Chelsea Flower Show' (including the People's Vote for the Show Garden of the decade) why could not 'RHS Chelsea Flower Show' have replaced 'Garden Rescue'?

Yours faithfully,
Christopher Whitmey

Christopher Whitmey

Dear FOI Enquiries,

Thank you for your detailed reply which I have carefully considered. I regard the matter as closed. I will not be raising the matter with the ICO. This is mainly due to the pressures that everyone is under due to Covid-19.

Your explanatory note included, "This means the Act does not apply to information held for the purposes of creating the BBC’s output (TV, radio, online etc), or information that supports and is closely associated with these creative activities.".

I would have felt at least requests 5 and 6 for viewing figures fell outside 'creating output'. Similarly the other requests I felt dealt with scheduling output rather than creating it.

Since my request you have broadcast ''The Best of the RHS Chelsea Flower Show'' in a similar timeslot as the original schedule - thank you.

Yours sincerely,

Christopher Whitmey
