Summary of Medical Suitability for Armed Forces candidates with ACL injury History based on JSP 950

Nathan Ormond made this Freedom of Information request to Ministry of Defence This request has been closed to new correspondence. Contact us if you think it should be reopened.

The request was successful.

Dear Ministry of Defence,
I am writing to clarify the use of the JSP 950 as it applies to Anterior Cruciate Ligament (ACL) Reconstruction with regards to medical selection of applicants attempting to join the armed forces. My understanding is "Candidates with any history... are graded P8L8" (JSP 950, Annex K, 51 a). My question with regards to this and the implementation of JSP 950 is the following:

i) Does JSP 950 contain any additional clause that would allow for a candidate to be deemed medically fit for HM Armed forces (Army and Navy) under any circumstance.

ii) Would the single service policy of a force being applied for allow (with specialist advice and evidence) for a candidate to be taken on (potentially "on risk" )and deemed as medically fit despite the JSP 950.

iii)Is the only way for a candidate with any medical history of ACL injury and rehabilitation to be accepted as medically fit for a career with HM Armed forces by a change to JSP 950 achieved hypothetically by writing to the chief medical officer.

iv) Could the chief medical officer deem an individual as medically fit based on significant evidence and support from medical professionals and research without change to JSP 950 for an individual case.

Thank You.

Yours faithfully,
Nathan Ormond
