Freedom of Information (SCM), Science Museum Group

Dear Cheryl Hall,

Thank you for your Freedom of Information Act (2000) request relating to
the subscription costs to academic journals. In line with the terms of the
Act I am writing in order for you to clarify one aspect of your request.
Are you interested in those subscriptions taken by the Science Museum
only? As I am sure you are aware until this point is confirmed by you the
deadline for a response has been suspended.

Additionally my colleagues in the Museum's Library Service have also
informed me that it maybe difficult for the Museum to supply information
relating to the publisher of each title as records of subscriptions are
not maintained in this way. Therefore I wonder whether it would be
possible for your original enquiry to be worded slightly differently;

Total annual cost of maintaining subscriptions to all academic journals,
in any format, from 2005 to the present, broken down by publication title
if possible.

I would also like to take this opportunity to inform you that the Science
Museum takes its Freedom of Information responsibilities very seriously.
Each request is investigated and as much information as possible is
released.

Dear Rory

I am happy with your suggested clarification:

Total annual cost of maintaining subscriptions to all academic journals,
in any format, from 2005 to the present, broken down by publication title if possible.

Please could you fulfill this request for the Science Museum Group as a whole, not just the Science Museum.

Many thanks

Cheryl Hall

Dear Cheryl Hall,

Thank you for your Freedom of Information Act (2000) request dated 22nd
August 2014 with regards to the possibility of obtaining from the Science
Museum Group information relating to academic journal subscriptions. I
have contacted the Library Teams for each Museum within the group. If I
may I will address each Museum separately:

Science Museum (London)

Please see attached spreadsheet of results.

National Railway Museum (York)

Please see attached spreadsheet of results. My colleagues wished me to
convey the following caveats:

1) Figures were recorded part-way through the financial year 2005-6;
therefore results for this year are not complete.

2) Several figures within the financial year 2006-7 have been recorded
within another currency (i.e not in Stirling). These entries have been
highlighted but not converted into Stirling. Therefore totals which
include these figures will not be accurate.

3) From financial year 2008-9 the National Railway Museum began using a
subscription agency called Ebsco; as such not all titles are listed. The
Library has supplied for latter years those titles included in the Ebsco
fee; these titles have been retained in the attached spreadsheet for your
interest and for the sake of completeness.

4) Figures stop at the end of the last financial year as we are only part
way through this financial year.

National Media Museum (Bradford)

Please see attached spreadsheet of results. My colleagues wished me to
convey the following caveats

1) The National Media Museum currently uses the subscription agency Ebsco.

2) Data before c.2009 is not recorded.

Manchester Museum of Science & Industry (MOSI)

Please see attached spreadsheet of results. My colleagues wished me to
convey the following caveats:

1) The Museum does receive a journal by way of subscription to the
following: ICON, the MA and the ARA.

2) The Museum does not receive a journal from its subscription to the
Social History Curators Group; this return has been retained in the
results for the sake of completeness.

3) MOSI joined the Science Museum Group in 2012. As such they are
currently reviewing all subscription costs in order to avoid duplication
across the family of Museums.

I trust this information is of some use to you and I wish you all the best
with your research.
