Study spaces and students

Devans87 made this Freedom of Information request to University of Liverpool

This request has been closed to new correspondence. Contact us if you think it should be reopened.

We're waiting for Devans87 to read a recent response and update the status.

Dear University of Liverpool,

Could you please provide me with the number of study spaces, either with a computer or a plug socket, available for students in Liverpool?

Also, regarding a previous response 'The University is not able to confirm the number of students who have registered as final numbers will not be available until our November and
January admissions are complete.' to Brian Jones (https://www.whatdotheyknow.com/request/p...), could you provide the number of undergraduate and postgraduate students physically studying in Liverpool based on the November admissions?

Yours faithfully,
Dan Evans

Dear Dan

Thank you for your email requesting information from the University of
Liverpool.  From our preliminary assessment, we will not be able to answer
your request without further clarification.

Can you clarify if you mean total study spaces normally available, or
those currently available within government restrictions?  I can advise
that we do not hold records of study spaces that have access to a plug. We
will hold information on total study spaces and may hold information on
study spaces with a PC. You may wish to refine this aspect of your
request.

Can you clarify if you mean the total number of students in our November
entry only or the combined total from our September and November entry.

Once you have clarified your request, I will be able to begin to process
your request.

If I do not receive clarification within three months your request will be
considered to have lapsed. Please note that under section 1(3) of the
Freedom of Information Act 2000, a public authority need not comply with a
request unless any further information reasonably required to locate the
information is supplied.

Kind regards, Kirsty

Thanks for your quick response.

I would like the combined total of students in the September and November entry, the total number of study spaces normally available and also the number of study spaces currently available within government restrictions.

FOI/2020/507

16 December 2020

Name:  Dan Evans

By email to: [1] [FOI #706512 email]

Dear Mr Evans,

Thank you for your email of 17 November requesting information from the
University of Liverpool.  Colleagues have provided the information
requested below.

Could you please provide me with the total number of study spaces normally
available and the number of study spaces currently available within
government restrictions.

Total number of study spaces within our Library is 3,600. We currently
have 615 study spaces available within current restrictions.

Regarding a previous response 'The University is not able to confirm the
number of students who have registered as final numbers will not be
available until our November and January admissions are complete.' to
Brian Jones
([2]https://www.whatdotheyknow.com/request/p...),
could you provide the number of undergraduate and postgraduate students
physically studying in Liverpool based on the November admissions?

The information you have requested is not held. We are unable to identify
from our systems whether students are studying physically as circumstances
are constantly changing e.g. regional Tier 2 or 3 restrictions imposed,
national restrictions imposed, asked to self-isolate by NHS Test and Trace
etc.

Section 16 of FOIA places an obligation on the University to provide you with advice
and assistance.  We can advise that can provide overall totals of students
registered for our September and November intakes.

If you are unhappy with the way we have handled your request for
information, you have a right under Section 50 of the Freedom of
Information Act to ask the University to review it; however, you must do
so within 40 working days of the date of this response. Your request
should include our reference number and explain the reason for requesting
a review. Email [3][University of Liverpool request email] or write to the Freedom of
Information Reviewer, Legal & Compliance, University of Liverpool,
Foundation Building, 765 Brownlow Hill, Liverpool L69 7ZX.  We will
respond to your request for an internal review within 20 working days of
receipt.

Following an internal review, if you remain dissatisfied with the handling
of your request, you have a right to appeal to the Information
Commissioner at The Information Commissioner’s Office, Wycliffe House,
Water Lane, Wilmslow, Cheshire SK9 5AF. Telephone:  0303 123 1113
[4]www.ico.org.uk.

There is no charge for making an appeal.

Yours sincerely,
