Dear Benn

We hold information on the number of students who have registered as visually impaired. I attach a spreadsheet with the breakdown of those students. Please note that the spreadsheet uses acronyms for the different faculties: STEM (Science, Technology and Maths), FBL (Finance, Business and Law), LTI (Learning Teaching Innovation), WELS (Wellbeing, Education and Language Studies), FASS (Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences) . PG and UG also refer to postgraduate and undergraduate students.

However there is no obligation to register as visually impaired and therefore the attached data does not accurately reflect the number of students registered with the University who are visually impaired; some students may choose not to register their visual impairment. In addition we do not hold data on whether those students are text to speech reader or screen readers.

I hope this has been helpful.

Dear Benn,

Please accept my personal apologies for the email that I sent you
yesterday. This was separate data not related to your question and sent in
error. I now attach the data you requested - the number of students who
have registered as visually impaired and again.  Again I am afraid we
don’t hold data on the nature of the impairment and I issue the same
caveat about the quality of the data.

You also asked for the total number of students, this is set out in “facts
and figures” held on the OU website and for 2016/17 was 173,927.
