Dear Sir/Madam,

Re: Request for information under the Freedom of Information Act 2000.

Thank you for your request for information received by Southampton Solent
University on the 20 August 2019.

The number of students between academic year 2009/2010 and 2019/2020 who
have;

Requested to utilise an assistance dog on Solent university premises,

·         The number of these students who have been given permission to
use an assistance dog,

Students’ requests to bring an assistance dog onto campus are dealt with
on a case by case basis. This includes students with an assistance dog
trained by a recognised organisation (including Assistance Dogs UK). The
University doesn’t currently keep a record of numbers but we estimate
approximately less than or equal to 5 students have attended university
since 2009/10 with their assistance dog.

·         A breakdown of reasons for rejection of a students request to
utilise an assistance dog on university premises,

A student can request to bring an assistance dog onto campus and provide
relevant evidence. If relevant evidence is provided, assessed and
accepted, an assistance dog provided/trained as above would be able to
access University premises. Assistance dogs not trained by a recognised
organisation are considered on a case by case basis.

Solent University is not currently in a position to allow students to
bring owner trained assistance dogs onto campus. If a dog is not
trained/provided by a recognised charity/organisation, the University does
not have assurance that the dog is trained, and will respond appropriately
to situations that arise and is able to provide the required support.
Examples of this include: responding to crises, toileting on command,
behaviour/socialisation, public places/busy spaces, road safety, and
accommodation

·         Any policy, procedure or guidance related to disability
discrimination, reasonable adjustments, or, the use of assistance dogs on
university premises.

The University policy relating to assistance dogs on university premises
is attached.

If you are dissatisfied with the handling of your request, please contact
the University’s Clerk of Governors, Southampton Solent University, East
Park Terrace, Southampton SO14 0YN, e-mail:
[1][email address] for an internal review.  Please note
that this does not affect your right to appeal to the Information
Commissioner’s Office ([2]www.ico.gov.uk) should you remain dissatisfied
with the University’s response.

Yours sincerely,
