h) The only mention of toilets in a policy is in the behaviour policy “We
operate a zero-tolerance approach to vaping: it is never acceptable to
vape, or be involved in vaping activity, in our school. So, we will apply
sanctions as described below if we believe, on the balance of probability,
that a student has been involved in vaping activity. ‘Being involved’
includes being in possession of vaping paraphernalia and/or being in a
group among which we believe vaping has taken place – for example, if
there were two or three students in a toilet cubicle where we believe
vaping has taken place, they will all receive a sanction. It is actually
very hard to catch someone in the act of vaping, which is why we will
apply sanctions on the balance of probability.” The only other thing that
could be mentioned in terms of rules is that there are signs up to remind
students that only one student can be in a cubicle at any one time. There
are also signs for the enclosed toilet areas stating how many students can
be in that area at any one time.
Minutes from any governor meetings where toilets/behaviour are discussed
are attached.
i) In terms of behaviour incidents connected to school toilets there have
been three logged so far this academic year; two instances of truancy and
one instance of vaping. In 2022-23 there were seven incidents recorded
connected to toilets - three instances of suspected vaping, two students
who had a fight with one another and two instances of truancy.
j) Yes
k) All out of school. No reported sexual assaults took place on the
school site.
l) Toilet risk assessments are covered in the general school risk
assessment document – attached.
m) Summer 2023. Conversion/refurbishment of separate boys and girls
toilets into one large (shared washing facilities) group of toilets with
floor to ceiling cubicles in order to increase the number of toilets in
the school. This toilet block was originally built in the 1970s and was
in need of a complete overhaul. There was no reduction in the number of
dedicated male and female specific cubicles, but 3 additional unisex
cubicles were created as well as 2 accessible toilets with self-contained
washing facilities. Cost of the project (including structural work)
£105,154.
