Students caught cheating

The request was successful.

Dear Bournemouth University,

I would like to know:

1) What was the number of students caught cheating in coursework in
the last 5 years? Can I have a breakdown for each year.

2) What was the number of exam candidates caught cheating in the
last 5 years? Can I have a breakdown for each year.

3) If cheating was found in exams, what was the most common form?

4) If cheating was found in coursework or exams, how were students
punished?

Yours faithfully,

Julie Cordier

Freedom Of Information, Bournemouth University

Dear Ms Cordier,

We write further to your email of 25 October 2011 for
information about students at our University cheating in examinations and
assessments.

Your request has been processed by us in accordance with the Freedom of
Information Act 2000 (FOIA).

We set out our responses to each of your questions as follows:

'1) What was the number of students caught cheating in coursework in

the last 5 years? Can I have a breakdown for each year.'

Answer:

Academic year    Number

2010/11               58 students

2009/10               57 students

2008/09              38 students

2007/08              38 students

2006/07              32 students

Total  =              223

'2) What was the number of exam candidates caught cheating in the

last 5 years? Can I have a breakdown for each year.'

Answer:

Academic year      Number

2010/11                3 students

2009/10                2 students

2008/09               1 student

2007/08               4 students

2006/07               None recorded

Total  =              10

'3) If cheating was found in exams, what was the most common form?'

Answer:

Plagiarism- mainly from the internet.

'4) If cheating was found in coursework or exams, how were students

punished?'

Answer:

It depends upon the severity and, where applicable, the number of times
they had already been found to have cheated. A large proportion of
students gained 0% for that element of their assessment or unit and any
resubmission would be capped at 40% for undergraduates and 50%  for post
graduates.

If you have any questions or are dissatisfied with this response, you
should contact us at [1][email address]. The University’s Deputy
Vice-Chancellor or his nominated alternate will review any appeal and may
amend the University’s current decision.  Thereafter you may refer your
request to the Information Commissioner in accordance with section 50
of the FOIA.  He can be contacted at:
