Dear Southampton Solent University,

I would like to know:

1) What was the number of students caught cheating in coursework in
the last 5 years? Can I have a breakdown for each year.

2) What was the number of exam candidates caught cheating in the
last 5 years? Can I have a breakdown for each year.

3) If cheating was found in exams, what was the most common form?

4) If cheating was found in coursework or exams, how were students
punished?

Dear Julie Cordier

Re: Request for information under the Freedom of Information Act 2000

Thank you for your request for information, received by Southampton Solent
University on the 25 October 2011, requesting information from the
University on student cheating in examinations and/or assessments.

Your request will be considered and you will receive the information
requested within the statutory timescale of 20 working days, as defined by
the Freedom of Information Act 2000, subject to the information not being
exempt.  

The Act defines a number of exemptions that may prevent release of the
information you have requested.  Should this prove to be the case after
your request is assessed, you will be formally informed of this, including
your right to appeal.

In some circumstances a fee may be payable and if that is the case, a fees
notice will be issued to you which you will be required to pay before we
proceed with your request.

University on student cheating in examinations and/or assessments.

Please find the University’s response below.

1) What was the number of students caught cheating in coursework in the
last 5 years? Can I have a breakdown for each year?

2010-11                285
2009-10                250
2008-09                241
2007-08                281
2006-07                233        = 1290 incidents

NB: These figures represent the number of individual incidents.  Some
students may have more than one instance of academic misconduct.

2) What was the number of exam candidates caught cheating in the last 5
years? Can I have a breakdown for each year.

2010-11                15
2009-10                 2
2008-09                 5
2007-08                 5
2006-07                10        = 37 incidents

NB: These figures represent the number of individual incidents.  Some
students may have more than one instance of academic misconduct.

3) If cheating was found in exams, what was the most common form?

Southampton Solent University can confirm that the most common form of
cheating found during examinations was taking in unauthorised notes.  

4) If cheating was found in coursework or exams, how were students
punished?

Southampton Solent University’s Academic Misconduct Inquiry Panel can
impose a variety of penalties to students who are found guilty of
cheating.  Please find attached a copy of the University’s tariff for
2010-11.
