FOI/2021/206

Dear Mr. Slater,

I am writing in response to your Freedom of Information request to
Sheffield Hallam University. Please see the information below in response
to your request.

The University set out in its [1]terms and conditions and its offers to
students information on how the changing nature of the pandemic might
necessitate changes to aspects of the teaching and learning.   Many
changes made to teaching and assessment were not substantive or material
in relation to the delivery to the course or to the student contract.
Where changes were made to teaching and assessment which were material,
individual academic course teams were directed to engage with students to
explain in detail the rationale for the proposed change and to provide
opportunities for questions and raising concerns before seeking consent to
the change.  Where student concerns were unable to be resolved through
local discussions with course teams or within the academic Department,
students were directed to the University Complaints Procedure, for
consideration of any complaint at formal Stage One of the process, (the
informal resolution stage being deemed to have been completed).

The determination of the nature of changes was considered at a local level
starting at the Colleges down through the individual departments. Section
12 of the Freedom of Information Act allows a pubic authority to refuse to
comply with a request for information where the cost of compliance is
estimated to exceed a set limit known as the appropriate limit.  The
appropriate limit is set at £450, at £25 per hour equivalent to 18.5 hours
of staff time. To identify and collate this information would exceed the
appropriate cost limits under Section 12 of the Freedom of Information Act
and therefore the University is refusing this portion of your request.

This concludes the University’s response to your request. Should you be
dissatisfied with how the University has handled your request, please
consult the attached complaints procedure.

Regards,

David Goldberg
