Cameron Buchan

Dear University of Glasgow,

The University states that the reason behind closing down departments and making staff redundant is financial viability.

Could you please provide me with the relevant information that clearly demonstrates that the Student Lifecyle Project, which will cost in excess of £13.2m, is a viable investment.

If you can not provide such information, can you give the following:

a. Why such an assessment has never been conducted?

b. When is the university going to conduct a financial viability study of the Student Lifecycle Project; if not, why not?

Yours faithfully,

Cameron Buchan

May I suggest that Robert Fraser the director of Finance to be tasked to provide the requested information. After all he is a member of the committee overseeing the Student Life Cycle Project. I suppose he has been put there to make sure that the University gets value for its money. Let us see his assessment!

I would hope that the 'financial viability' has also been reviewed in the light of the system that SLP will actually be introducing. From talking to SLP team members it seems that much of the expected system will now not be available for several years (if ever). Also it seems that the system will lead to significant extra work for staff in many areas. Has all of this been factored in?

I asked them for a financial viability report and they sent me the minutes of a meeting. They don’t seem to know that a financial viability report must contain facts and figures justifying the investment.
No wonder, this University is run by an economist!
