Student Full-Time Equivalent Figures at Cardiff University 2012 to 2020

The request was successful.

Bumpy Landing Project

Dear Cardiff University,

A variety of requests have been made of your organisation in respect of staff and student FULL TIME EQUIVALENT (FTE) and headcount figures relating to several academic years. No alternative counts/measure have been sought. While your FOI responses under the heading of staffing responded offering (as had been requested) FTE and headcount, we notice that the figures you have provided with respect to students fail to clarify the precise measurement being used. This ambiguity is an issue. The present request is made to gain robust FTE figures from you.

We seek only FULL-TIME EQUIVALENT Figures. We hope that this keeps things simple for you.

THE FORM THAT THE FOI RESPONSE SHOULD TAKE:
Please provide your response in the form of an excel sheet, attached to your FOI response as an attachment, so that those analysing this data can do so without the need to re-input information (avoiding the risk of human error).

OUR FOI REQUEST:
We ask for FULL TIME EQUIVALENT student figures for the 2012/13, 2013/14, 2014/15, 2015/16, 2016/17, 2017/18, 2018/19 and 2019/20 academic years. Each academic year should be addressed in a separate excel sheet.

In each excel sheet relating to the relevant year, we ask for the following information to be provided and sub-categorised by College (i.e. PSE, AHSS, BLS, and where relevant other units where these sit outside of the college structure but students are registered) and the schools within those college (or where relevant other units for which students are registered and would appear on HESA data).

(1) THE *FULL-TIME EQUIVALENT* (FTE) total of all Undergraduate students registered within each school;
(2) THE *FULL-TIME EQUIVALENT* (FTE) total of all Postgraduate Taught (PGT) students registered within each school;
(3) THE *FULL-TIME EQUIVALENT* (FTE) total of all Postgraduate Research (PGR) students registered within each school;
(4) THE *FULL-TIME EQUIVALENT* (FTE) total of any other student populations (e.g. foundational, certificate, diploma or other qualifications/forms of study) registered within each school (or where relevant, unit at Cardiff University).

Please provide FULL TIME EQUIVALENT totals for the relevant student populations as well as grand totals of FTE students per school and college. We would also ask for a grand total of the overall FTE student population at Cardiff University for each of those years. We will check the figures you provide against Higher Education Statistics Agency (HESA) data and will return to you should we have further queries.

We thank you in advance, and would be grateful for your prompt action on this matter. Our aim is to ensure the reporting of accurate data and trends and we require your assistance and careful attention to FOI requests to ensure this.

Yours faithfully,

The Bumpy Landing Project

Bumpy Landing Project

Dear InfoRequest,

Once again, thank you so much for your response. Having viewed the figures and the information provided, we are really impressed with the effort and attention to detail. Cannot say how grateful we are.

One query - would you be able to separate out MLANG from WELSH please - in relation to student FTE figures? On previous FOIs - and in line with WELSH appearing to be a separate school from MLANG - we have received separate staffing numbers and would appreciate student numbers as they pertain to that unit in order to be able to make like for like comparison.

Yours sincerely,

Nicky Michaels

InfoRequest, Cardiff University

Dear Nicky

The information provided was extracted from the data collated as part of the University's HESA return. HESA considers Welsh as part of Modern Languages and makes no distinction, which is why we have reported on WELSH and MLANG as a combined figure (there is only one cost centre - 137 modern languages). It is arbitrary that, within Cardiff University, we have Welsh as a separate school.

Languages, more than any other subject, need to be calculated at module level as many language students are on joint honours courses containing numerous module options. Just at undergraduate level Cardiff offers 92 courses aligned to languages (e.g. Business Management with a European Language, Law and Welsh, French and politics, Archaeology with Italian, etc.) and each of those courses offers numerous module options (in reality each student may be following a unique module combination). We do not hold information in this source in a way in which figures for WELSH and MLANG can be identified.

Kind regards
