FreedomOfInformation, University of Dundee

Dear Mr Conway,
Thank you for your request for information from the University of Dundee.
Colleagues provide data in response to your questions below. Where
information is not held, please treat this email as notice of that per
S.17 of FoI(S)A.
1. For each of the past ten academic years (2008-09 to 2018-19), how many
University of Dundee students have died while a student at the
university?
2. Please provide, if possible, a breakdown by gender for each year.
Please note that we have replaced small numbers with ‘less than five’.
This is our normal practice when releasing information to reduce the risk
of the inadvertent identification of individuals and the inappropriate
release of personal data. As I am sure you will appreciate this issue, I
have omitted an explanation per S.16 and S.38 of FoI(S)A from this email
for brevity. However, please let me know if you require that for your
records.
Total figures based on information recorded in the student records system:
2008/09 - <5
2009/10 - <5
2010/11 - 7
2011/12 - <5
2012/13 - 7
2013/14 - 5
2014/15 - <5
2015/16 - 6
2016/17 - <5
2017/18 - <5
2018/19 - <5

3. For each of the past ten academic years (2008-09 to 2018-19), how many
University of Dundee students have committed suicide while a student at
the university?

Colleagues confirm that whilst we are always profoundly saddened to hear
of anyone choosing to take their own life, we do not maintain a dataset
tracking the number of people that do so. The student records system
records the number of deaths amongst the student population, but not the
cause of death.

You may be able to source some information from Police Scotland. Their FoI
contact information is available online here -
[1]http://www.scotland.police.uk/access-to-....

4. The university’s rationale behind choosing to record or not to record
student suicides.

Someone may choose to take their own life whilst off campus or outwith
semester time and whilst the University may be aware of a death, we will
not always be aware of the details.

5. University policy regarding all actions the university take after a
student commits suicide

The University does not have a specific policy in this domain. The
University treats any incident in this domain on a case by case basis.

I trust that this information is helpful. Please let me know if I can be
of further assistance.

Kind regards,

Alan
