Student Appeals Statistics

We're waiting for A Fry to read recent responses and update the status.

Dear Durham University,

For the last five (5) years what are the total numbers of Faculty Appeals received, broken down by year received and then Faculty that the appeal was submitted to?

For Faculty Appeals, broken down by year and then by Faculty, how many were upheld with recommendation for concession, how many were upheld with referral back to Board of Examiners, and how many were found to have no valid grounds for appeal?

For all Faculty Appeals, broken down by year and then by Faculty, what was the average (mean) length of time for appeals to be considered, from submission of the appeal to the Faculty until the student being notified of outcome?

For all Faculty Appeals, broken down by year and then by Faculty, what was the maximum length of time for appeals to be considered, from submission of the appeal to the Faculty until the student being notified of outcome?

For the last five (5) years how many appeals, broken down by year and then by Faculty, were escalated by the student to Senate Appeals following Faculty Appeal outcome?

For all Senate Appeals how many, broken down by year and then Faculty, were upheld with recommendation for concession, how many were upheld and referred back to the Board of Examiners, and how many were found to have no grounds for appeal?

How many Senate Appeals, broken down by year and then Faculty, were referred by the student to the Office of the Independent Adjudicator for Higher Education (OIA) following appeal outcome?

How many cases referred to the OIA, broken down by year and then by Faculty, were successful, how many were partially successful, and how many were unsuccessful?

For the academic year 2019/20, how many Faculty Appeals have been received, broken down by Faculty, relating to the Easter Term exam season?

Yours faithfully,

A Fry

Durham University do not hold this information in a central or easily
accessible format.

It is estimated that the time taken to locate, retrieve and extract the
requested information would exceed the fees limit associated with the
Freedom of Information Act 2000 (FOIA). Under Section 12 of the FOIA, the
University is not obliged to comply with a request for information if the
cost of compliance would exceed a £450 threshold, a figure which equates
to approximately 18 hours of work spent searching/retrieving and
extracting requested information.

The university may be able to disclose some of the requested information
if you are prepared to narrow the scope of your request. However, we
cannot confirm at this stage if this would bring your request under the
appropriate limit, or that another exemption will not apply

If you are dissatisfied with the University’s response to your freedom of
information request, you can ask us to internally review our handling of
your request, including the application of any exemptions applied.  To do
this, please email [1][Durham University request email] or write to:

Dear ACCESS I.,

Could you give a figure for the estimate of what time commitment you feel this request would take? This would assist me in deciding how to narrow the scope.

My initial suggestion for cutting down the working time would be that all requests be considered for the previous 3 years rather than 5. Additionally, rather than considering how appeals were upheld in different ways, simply stating how many were upheld and how many were rejected. Additionally, disregard requests relating to appeals escalated to the OIA, I have since found this information up to 2019 on the OIA website.

Yours sincerely,

A Fry
