Our Ref. FOI1864

Dear Ryan Jarvis,

Further to your request for information, the University's response is
below:

1. How many rooms in total were the university licensed to rent to
students for the Academic Year 2018/2019?

2,556

2. How many rooms were occupied during the Academic Year 2018/2019?

2,511.

3. How many rooms were vacant even though they were available for
occupation during the Academic Year 2018/2019?

45.

4. How much in total has the University earned in rental income from
occupied rooms which have been rented to students during the Academic Year
2018/2019?

The University considers that information in relation to the financial
performance of accommodation is exempt from disclosure under Section 43(2)
of the Freedom of Information Act 2000. Section 43(2) is a qualified
exemption and the University has considered the public interest test in
relation to this request:

Factors in favour of disclosure

As the University is subject to the Freedom of Information Act 2000 it
recognises the requirement to be open and transparent about its business.
Disclosure of this information would better inform students, prospective
students and the general public in relation to how the University operates
it’s residential holdings.

Factors against disclosure

Disclosure of this information is likely to affect the future commercial
interests of the University which operates in an extremely competitive
environment in relation to student accommodation. Disclosure of this
information would allow competitors to potentially capitalise on our
figures and develop business models to compete directly with the
University in a competitive marketplace.

Balance Test

In order that the University ensures it continues to obtain value for
money, it believes that it is of greater public interest to withhold this
information.

5. How much has the University spent on maintenance of the accommodation
during the Academic Year 2018/2019?

As above.

Please note that the University has a formal complaints procedure. If you
are unhappy with the service you have received in relation to your request
and wish to make a complaint or request a review of our decision you
should write to the University’s Governance & Compliance Office in the
first instance ([1][Bangor University request email]) explaining the grounds
for your complaint. In line with guidance from the Information
Commissioner’s Office, an appeal request must be submitted within two
months of the University’s final response to this Freedom of Information
Act request.

Kind regards,

Compliance Team
